At the turn of the twentieth century, Gertrude Käsebier had accomplished many things - marriage, children, a stellar art career, and success in the magazine marketplace. She was one of the best-known photographers in the United States. Her photographs of women and children hung in major exhibitions. Critics extolled the virtues of her portraits. In 1899 one of her pictures sold for $100, the highest price yet paid for a photograph and a record that was rarely challenged for over fifty years.

Framing tip: Color can change the entire mood of a picture, from calm to exciting, and can influence the “season” the image suggests, lending the same artwork a winter, spring, summer or fall feel depending on the color and sheen of the frame and mat.
Framing tip: If you aren’t sure which direction to take, choose a high quality white or cream mat and use a simple frame in either black or a mid-tone wood. This approach will complement almost any item.

John William Waterhouse was born today, April 6 in 1849. He led a quiet social life in contrast to his paintings which tell tales of vibrant love, betrayal, and tragedy. Often inspired by beautiful yet ultimately tragic women this artist produced over 200 paintings during his lifetime and was highly regarded by his peers and patrons alike.
Although in many cases deserving photos are not given the proper respect of a frame, beautifully mounted photographs will add a brilliant accent to your life.
