The most common reason many survivors of childhood sexual abuse choose not to tell anyone about the sexual abuse is the concern that people won’t believe them. Survivors rarely lie or exaggerate about being sexual abused. In fact, survivors of sexual abuse are much more likely to downplay the violence against them. If someone tells you, it’s because they trust you and need to talk to someone. Listen, believe them and support them. These are the brave stories of mothers, sisters, fathers, brothers, husbands, and sons. They are strong, fearless and courageous survivors for choosing to speak out. Survivors usually speak out when they feel emotionally and mentally strong and no one should force them into doing something that they are not ready to do. There's a process that each survivor must go through in order to come forth with the sexual abuse and we must respect that process. Please share and let all their voices be heard. Thank you Ali for being part of the It was ME Campaign project. You are brave and courageous to be taking these steps. Your story may be very important for someone else that is struggling to seek help or break their own silence. Survivors feel empowered when they know that they are not alone. For that I thank you. The healing process is a little easier with the help of those that are also healing. Cecibel &Harold It was ME Campaign

There are many structures within the human mind that are affected by sexual abuse. These structures have specific jobs to do during a child’s development, and damage to them in youth, while not irreversible, presents serious cognitive challenges for them as they age. Neurophysiological research on child survivors has been ongoing for over 12 years. In that time, neuroscientists such as Dr. Martin Teicher of Harvard, and Dr. Bruce Perry of the Child Trauma Academy in Houston, have shown direct connections between childhood abuse and abnormal brain development.
