Hey everyone, this is James Johnson and let me just start by saying how happy I am to be in Chicago. The facilities here are great, there has been so much history here on the basketball court, and the city is unbelievable. I can’t wait to call this place home and begin training and working out with the rest of the guys.

Looking back at draft night, ...I was back home in Cheyenne, Wyoming. I spent it with some family members and friends and we were at a place called Jackson’s. It’s a great spot with a lot of TVs. We had our own section and it was great spending that night with people close to me. When they called my name, that place erupted. I didn’t know what to do. I had to sit down, actually, and just gather myself for a little bit. My parents were crying and it was a special moment.

I was definitely happy with how things went that night. I didn’t even know before the pick was announced that the Bulls were taking me. Words can’t explain the emotions and feelings I had at that time. I’m just glad it was the Bulls who picked me, and I hope I can help carry on the tradition in Chicago. I’m already thinking about what I can do to help us get past the first round in the playoffs.

Leading up to the draft, I only had one workout with the Bulls and I felt I did pretty well. I was pretty confident they’d pick me if I was there for them at 16. I liked it in Chicago from the start, and I felt I interacted with Mr. Forman and Mr. Paxson pretty well during dinner. My workout was good, and now I’m with the Bulls. I’m excited and it’s a dream come true. You grow up watching Michael Jordan highlights and we all saw how great of a shooter Mr. Paxson was and now I’m a part of that. I was always a big fan of Scottie Pippen, too; they just have so much history. It’s a great feeling to be able to come in now and hopefully help make some history of our own.

On Monday, I finally made it to the United Center as the team introduced my new teammate and fellow rookie, Taj Gibson, and me. We had a press conference in the morning, then a photo shoot on the court. I had to deal with the media and some of that at Wake Forest and playing in the ACC, but in the same way, it’s a lot more exciting doing it now. I know we haven’t even played a game yet, but joining this team and the process of meeting everyone with the organization so far has been a blessing. It’s been fun and I love every minute of it.

I like Taj a lot. We saw each other a few times throughout this whole process, and he’s a cool kid, down to earth. He knows what his goals are just as much as I do. We’re both excited to get it going.

I don’t want to sound repetitive, but wearing the Bulls jersey yesterday was truly a dream come true. I put it on before the shoot and talked to Gibson a little bit, and we were like, ‘Wow, we’re Bulls.’ We didn’t know if they’d let us take any shots so we both snuck in a few before we got going. It’s been a great experience though—new teammates, new team. Of course I’ll always remember my old teammates, too.

For now, I’m back home and I’m going to train a little bit before returning to Chicago and getting ready for mini-camp. That starts next week at the Berto Center, and then it’s off to Las Vegas for summer league. None of this will be easy, so I’m going to train and do everything I can so I’m ready.

I’ll be checking in off and on over the coming weeks to talk about practices, our games and more. Thanks for reading and I’ll talk to you all soon.
