D.C. Jewish Community: Councilman White Must Repudiate Farrakhan
Washington, D.C. – On Friday, April 20th, the Jewish Community Council of Greater Washington and the AJC Washington Regional Office, released the following statement:
We are outraged by recent news reports and events about D.C. Councilmember Trayon White, who shocked us with his anti-Semitic speculation that the Rothschilds controlled the weather last month. According to Friday's reporting in the Washington Po...st, White contributed $500 from his constituent funds in January to support the activities of Louis Farrakhan, a notorious hate preacher who has incited bigotry against Jews, women and members of the LGBTQ community. We find this report extremely disturbing. Assuming this reporting proves correct, we condemn the councilmember’s reprehensible actions in the strongest possible terms.
When Councilmember Trayon White made his original comments, we strongly condemned his ignorant repetition of age-old anti-Semitic canards that have resulted in centuries of violence and hatred towards our people. However, we also believed that this incident created the opportunity for education and bridge-building. At the request of DC Council Chair Phil Mendelson, we convened a meeting of councilmembers with Jewish community leaders. The meeting resulted in a working plan to move forward with increased District-wide outreach and programming to address anti-Semitism and racism and foster greater understanding and empathy between our local Jewish and Black communities. As part of his own effort to better educate himself about the history and dangers of anti-Semitism, Councilmember White agreed to accompany the JCRC’s Rabbi Batya Glazer on a tour of the U.S. United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
Unfortunately, Councilmember White decided to leave the guided tour of the museum before it was completed. While we stand by our initial decision to meet ignorance with education and dialogue, we are incensed that Councilmember White made the completely unacceptable decision to suddenly and unexpectedly leave the tour midway. He missed half the tour, including the most critical part of the permanent exhibit, forfeiting the opportunity to understand the culmination of thousands of years of anti-Semitism that led to the slaughter of six million Jews.
In light of the Post’s revelations and the councilmember’s conduct at the Holocaust Museum, our patience and understanding are running out. Councilmember White must clearly and unequivocally repudiate anti-Semitism, Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam’s hateful creed, and dramatically change his behavior. Time will tell if he can move forward from these incidents or if these events will indelibly undermine his ability to lead.
