How could any human being – regardless of the position of authority they occupy – look the other way and think that they didn’t have a responsibility to report to law enforcement what they heard or what they saw?

Let me have you listen to Senator Jeanne Shaheen, one of your colleagues, talking about that scandal of the abuse of our gymnasts of our nation. Listen. As we're learning, this was not a simple case of negligence or failed oversight on the part of the US Olympic Committee, USA Gymnastics and other institutions. There is ample evidence that many were alerted multiple times to Nassar's behavior and they found excuses to look the other way. I know that you are very concerned about this and you've broadened the investigation with Senator Blumenthal. What more do you hope to learn out of this? Our Commerce Committee and the subcommittee that I chair has jurisdiction over Olympics and over sports and what we hope to accomplish is, and what I believe we will accomplish, is what has gone wrong, such that this kind of behavior resulting in these individuals who've been under these terrible, tragic circumstances, how could it happen? When someone reported it, what occurred then? If no one reported it, why not? How do we prevent this from happening in the future? How do we make sure that justice comes to those who've suffered so much for so long? And our investigation is involved asking all the affiliated Olympic committees, governing bodies: what did they know? When did they know it? And while the focus of this current issue is on gymnastics, USA gymnastics, we want to understand whether there's problems elsewhere. And again, I just don't know how any human being, it doesn't matter what position of authority you occupy, how can any human being look the other way and think they didn't have a responsibility to report to law enforcement what they heard or saw? And do you have witnesses who are cooperating and getting information to you? We have sent our investigation to all of the governing bodies of the USA Olympics, as well as Michigan State and the US Olympic Committee, and the responses are occurring. Alright, Senator Jerry Moran, thank you so much. You're welcome.
