I've been lately playing around with only my cellphone as part of an ongoing project. One of the first problems I ran into was how to create a sweeping vertical composition with my camera. I couldn't just throw that out the window since it is sorta my signature style . I got around it by using the camera in panorama mode and panning from top to bottom....worked like a charm.

Sometimes I think the purpose of life is to find those fleeting moments when all that matters is what is right in front of you.

Went on a quick overnight backpack with my son to Sheep Lake on the Pacific Crest Trail just north of Chinook Pass. We had a great time hanging out, exploring, and talking with PCT thru-hikers as they headed north to Canada. My son gave the trip a huge thumbs up

It was also my first real landscape photography situation with the DSLR left at home and only my iPhone in my pocket. I might have missed the large camera a couple of times but I certainly didn't miss the weight in... my pack. Just around sunrise, I wandered near the shore pointing my camera at just about anything when a little kiss of light came over the ridge and hit the top of a nearby peak. Not a bad way to start the week !!

So I haven't been posting much this summer. Truth be told, I haven't picked up my DSLR much lately. I've been having too much fun spending the summer with my family and I've been thinking of photography more like a chore and less of something I look forward to doing.

I recently and reluctantly purchased an iPhone so I could check my email and take the occasional family snapshot. A funny thing happened though. The more I used the camera on the iPhone, the more I wanted to sho...ot with it. I enjoy the spontaneity it gives me. I love editing images while out on the deck, at the beach, under a tree, or lying in bed. I dig exploring the vast multitude of apps that are out there and all the looks and styles they provide. And most importantly, I certainly don't miss carrying around the 15 pounds of camera gear every time I want to take a picture.

But all the time there was this nagging voice in the back of my head telling me I needed to pick up my "real camera" and create some "real photography". Since the idea of lugging all the gear out sounded to me like nails on a chalkboard, days between posts became weeks which stretched into the month since the last time I shared something on my photo page. Real photographers couldn't share cell phone picks as real art....right? Then today a thought suddenly popped into my head.....

Why not?

If lugging around the DSLR is not making me happy and shooting with the iPhone is, then why not just let the "pro" camera gather a little dust on the shelf for a while and just have some fun playing with photography again. Let's see what this little magic box can do.

So you will notice a little change in my photography for a while. Some of the images may seem familiar and some may be radically different than what I have shared before. Some you may love and some you may hate. I'm not exactly sure where this is all going but I'm excited about shooting again.

Through the years I've been asked a huge range of questions but the most common by far is "What camera should I buy?" I always gave the same response.....The one you will always carry with you.

I think it's time I start listening to my own advice

We've had an incredibly long stretch of sunny warm weather in the Pacific Northwest....so long that I'm almost expecting it. When I woke up yesterday morning and the radar showed thunderstorms pounding the mountains, I had a moment of panic. We packed up our rain gear and headed out for our planned hike anyway. I think the photo explains how the weather turned out

I dragged my son out of bed Monday morning at 5:30 and drove him up to Paradise on Mount Rainier. He may have been hating life at 5:30 but he sure was loving it a couple of hours later

After I dropped my son off at school yesterday, I took advantage of one of my last days of freedom by hiking by myself up to Lake Serene. Don't get me wrong....I love hiking with my son but....

As I started the climb, a group of four teens literally ran past me. There was a time when I would have sped up and tried to keep pace but that thought rarely enters my mind anymore. A quarter mile further on, I caught them resting by the side of the trail. A quarter mile after t...hat they sprinted past me again. The leap frogging continued until they turned off to the waterfall and I kept climbing to the lake. On the way back down, I passed them one by one plodding up to the lake. I stopped and chatted with the first young man for a second....he seemed genuinely surprised that I had already spent nearly an hour at the lake and was on my way down already. We parted and I ran in to the rest spread out down the trail, each looking a little more tired. I let them know they were almost there but I'm sure they knew I was chuckling inside....classic tortoise and the hare

Sunset on Mount Adams at Takhlakh Lake, Washington

Wow..it's been a while since I posted. A little tendinitis in my shoulder has been keeping me from shooting but I'm going to try to start editing some older images and sharing them. Most of the time, I am hoping for clouds to bounce the colors around at sunset but what should you do when the sky is perfectly clear? Just turn away from the sunset, face the other way and look for something really tall to catch that last light of day
