In inflation-adjusted dollars, health insurance companies pay psychologists 70% less today than in 1979. And they speak of improving mental health care…
The American Psychological Association guidelines for treating PTSD will harm patients and therapists both. Read my blog to find out why. https://www.psychologytoday.com/…/selling-bad-therapy-traum…

Science is not defined by hypothesis testing, and certainly not by Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs). Science is hypothesis generation (i.e, observation, critical thinking, conceptual thinking)... leading to hypothesis testing... leading to hypothesis revision and further hypothesis generation, based on the resulting findings... leading to further hypothesis testing. The process is inherently recursive/cyclical/dialectic.
IMHO, those who speak of some "hierarchy of evidence," or "gold standard," or equate science with hypothesis testing alone and leave out the whole cyclical process of which it is a component, or—worse—equate the whole of science with one research method (such as the RCT) are focused on trappings of science and missing its essence. That is scientism, not science. Or scientism masquerading as science.

To commemorate Sigmund Freud's 160th birthday last week, Google created this image along with the following explanation. So... How is it that Google can explain psychoanalysis to the public simply and clearly, but neither academics nor psychoanalysts themselves can do it?
"Did you wonder what your dream meant this morning? The idea that dreams 'mean' anything or that we have an active subconscious mind, is a concept we owe to Sigmund Freud, who was born 160 years ago today. F...reud is best known as the father of psychoanalysis, the method of resolving mental illness through a dialogue between a doctor and patient. The Freudian method of interpretation – looking for meaning beyond the surface of things – now extends far beyond the sphere of psychotherapy. Freudian terms like 'narcissism,' 'sibling rivalry,' 'free association,' and 'death wish' are part of our vernacular, and Freud's theories continue to fuel heated debate among academics.
A dimpled leather couch might be the typical visual associated with Freud and other therapists, but Doodler Kevin Laughlin instead created this iceberg. With a vast hidden base, the iceberg references the murky depths of the unconscious mind. More importantly, the design draws our eye to the horizon, reminding us how the genius of Freud's practice rests in the space between doctor and patient, reader and text, human and world."
