Toh Guan estate as seen from Skyline Bukit Batok, another cluster of high-rise public housing apartments. Like most Singaporeans, I reside in one of the country's many of such government-built housing estates. I've always wanted to capture a wide-angle view of Toh Guan like I've done with many other HDB estates, since this is where I actually live! Thanks to the newly-built Skyline Bukit Batok, I coul...d finally get this vantage point from a high enough location to get the entirety of Toh Guan into a frame.
Capturing the sunset with the estate from this vantage point is another challenge, because one can only get the sun in the frame towards the end of the year around the solstice. Only then you are able to get a glimpse of the sun at the rightmost edge of the frame. Any other time of the year would not be possible for a sunset view since the sun will be completely out of the shot. You will also need the sunset glow to stretch across the skies to cover the estate as well, else the sky will look visually imbalanced with the sun right in the rightmost corner.
I had actually wanted to shoot this angle two days ago when we had a very dramatic sunset, but I couldn't make it in time for the shot after getting home from work to prepare dinner. Fortunately, after the intense storms yesterday morning, the skies cleared up for a glowy sunset. It isn't as fiery as the one as I had wished to capture, but it's good nonetheless. With the monsoon rains at this time of the year, getting good light can be a challenge, so I'll take what I can get!
