The rhetoric of 2016 and 2017 isn't new. This 1943 film (short excerpt here) warns what can happen if we let ourselves be turned into "suckers" by the forces of... fanaticism and hatred. Illustrates how how political propaganda was used here to recruit Nazi sympathizers from the ranks of American racists.

Important network analysis, odd connections
Finally finished my over-long but hopefully more readable blog to go along with my recent ICWSM Paper on Alternative Media and Disinformation.

A truncated version: We take a systematic look at the alternative media ecosystem. Focusing on “alternative narratives” of crisis events, we use Twitter data to map the structure of the alternative media ecosystem. We find these domains host many different types of conspiracy theories — from political to pseudo-scientific. In this “virtual” world, the Sandy Hook School shootings were staged by crisis actors and the earth is actually flat after all.
Much of the content here is political propaganda—focused on “anti-globalism”, a term used to designate many different things— e.g. anti-immigration, anti-Western imperialism, anti-corporation, anti-media. Disturbingly, there were also strong currents of antisemitism (sometimes explicit, sometimes less so). Taken together, these positions align with and support the rise of nationalist ideologies in the U.S. and elsewhere.
We also note how the structure and content of the alternative media ecosystem suggest the use of intentional disinformation tactics — meant to create “muddled thinking” and a general mistrust in information.
