The recent fiascos surrounding Zoe Quinn and Anita Sarkeesian have made me more embarrassed by my subculture than all of my grade school bullies combined and multiplied. For years gamers have called for recognition of their medium as a legitimate art form, but the moment that conversation gets real we show that what we really want is to keep gaming in mom's basement with the rest of the toys.
Gaming has to change. That is the nature of art and media... and everything else for that matter! Your guinea pig will get old and die, your favorite band will do an experimental album and you can never go back to 1995. More than that, gaming really aught to change. I believe in gaming. I believe games can change the world for the better, but what I've seen from our culture thus far is an entitled boy's club that consumes simulations of heroism while acting like the bullies that abused them in high school. And with the help of the Gamergate folks the whole world is starting to take notice.
We did it guys! People are finally talking about us! The Art world, major news papers and every country with internet access is now recoiling in disgust as people from our community explain with righteous sincerity how the rape threats they sent were justified.
Fucking disgraceful.
