In spite of its harsh cold climate, the wildlife is diversified and includes polar bears and foxes. In 1994, the archipelago was declared a nature sanctuary. However, the islands used to serve as military base during the Soviet time. Millions of barrels, some of them containing heavy polluting chemicals have been left behind. The decomposition of this material and contamination of the biodiversity that would occur would mean a terrible ecological disaster. In 2012, a joint expedition started to clean the area.
