20200606_LATU structure - animation.mp4What is LATU? We are an autonomous movement building tenant power from below. We distribute power horizontally. We make decisions collectively and by consensus. We’re made up of autonomous local chapters, which are rooted in neighborhoods across LA. The locals are supported by union-wide committees. Each local has a representative on the LATU Spokescouncil. At Spokescouncil meetings, local representatives share updates with one another. New locals, committees, and affinity groups form to support the growth of the tenants movement. Our organizing takes place within the local chapters. When tenants organize, they form a tenants association (TA). TAs are supported by a local’s organizers and supporters. Committees form within locals to further support organizing efforts. All of this work at the molecular scale strengthens our city-wide movement. LATU’s city-wide movement is in solidarity with many tenants unions across Canada and the US. Together, these tenants movements make up the Autonomous Tenants Union Network. L.A. Tenants Union guide and template letter for notifying your landlord you won't be able to pay rent due to hardship. Remember: (1) you have to submit the letter within 7 days after rent is due, (2) contact the union if you don't know what local you're with, (3) you do NOT need to provide your landlord with proof of hardship -- only the letter, (4) you do NOT need to sign any repayment plan, regardless your landlord's insistence otherwise, and (5) get involved in the fight,... pass along to your neighbors, friends, and coworkers.
