I'll be hosting this CD release concert and get together for the T Sisters and American Nomad on May 2nd - there will be a whole bunch of new music and TWO new CDs hot off the press. I can't wait for you to hear them!

From the T's:
"American Nomad and the T Sisters have a lot in common. We like each other, we like to share shows, we share a producer in Laurie Lewis, and we both share the fact that our brand new albums are done, done, done! It's time to celebrate over a year of hard work making our records.

This unofficial CD release celebration will be held outdoors behind Sam's Log Cabin in Albany, CA. Sam's is not typically a live music venue, but they are going to host us for this special event because they are cool like that! The back of Sam's is large grassy area with an old time wagon. This will be a unique opportunity to experience our music, rest assured! The capacity of the space is going to be capped around 150 so we definitely recommend people buy tickets in advance. We are expecting this event to sell out. "

Here's more info on the project and Vern & Ray:
Hey, friends,
Kathy Kallick and I have been planning this tribute to our early bluegrass heroes, Vern Williams and Ray Park–aka Vern & Ray– for a long time now. We'll have the CD out in June, in time for the Fathers' Day Bluegrass Festival in Grass Valley, where we will be playing a set of Vern & Ray material. this coming weekend, we will be exploring the songs onstage before a live audience. Hoping that some of you reading this will be among them. The band is Kathy on guitar, Tom Rozum on mandolin, Patrick Sauber on banjo, Cary Black on string bass, and me on fiddle. This music is decidedly NOT for the faint-of-heart. See you there!

A TRIBUTE TO VERN & RAY WITH KATHY KALLICK & LAURIE LEWIS

Vern Williams and Ray Park both grew up in Arkansas, but never met until after moving to Stockton in the 1950s. Their memorable live performances and recordings in the '60s and '70s -- original songs like “Cabin on a Mountain," “Thinking of Home,” "Happy I'll Be," "How Many Times," "Flying Cloud," and "To Hell With the Land," as well as classics learned from the Carter Family, Bill Monroe, and Stephen Foster -- formed the basis for the bluegrass repertoire in California.

Among those coming under the spell of Vern & Ray -- and playing in their bands on occasion -- were Laurie Lewis and Kathy Kallick. They sang songs learned from Vern & Ray when they co-founded the influential Good Ol' Persons band, and have continued to do so while leading their own bands. They've released one album together, titled, in fact, "Together" (Rounder Records), and decided to revisit the songs and tunes of Vern & Ray for its long-awaited sequel.

Kathy & Laurie have recorded an album of this material as a tribute to the people most responsible for the dissemination of traditional bluegrass in California, and the concert celebrates that aspect of their heritage.

With summer coming into sight, I want to make sure you all know that I’ll be teaching at the Augusta Heritage Center's Bluegrass Week from July 27 through August 1. For those of you who aren't familiar with it, Augusta is a nonprofit organization in Elkins, WV, that promotes traditional arts. Bluegrass Week is a week of total immersion, with classes, jamming, concerts, dances, and lots of fun “hang time” with fellow pickers of all levels, from beginner to advanced.

Please help us spread the word to all your friends who play bluegrass instruments! Our amazing roster includes Ned Luberecki, Richard Bailey, and Casey Henry (banjo); Russ Barenberg, Tyler Grant, and Gary Nichols (guitar); Tammy Rogers, John Mailander, and Patrick McAvinue (fiddle); Jesse Cobb, Mike Compton, and Sharon Gilchrist (mandolin); Mark Panfil (dobro); Mike Fleming (bass); Laurie Lewis and Tom Rozum (vocals); and Kathy Kallick (songwriting). Staff musicians this year are Ira Gitlin, Neel Brown, John Seebach, and Mary Burdette.

We all hope to see you there. Thanks for spreading the word!
I'm so excited to be heading back to the Big Room in Chico, one of the best music rooms anywhere. Tom Rozum and I are playing a whole week of double bills with Melody Walker and Jacob Groopman, under the name Dos Duos, starting out this Tuesday the 15th.

George Shuffler, R.I.P.

I first met the legendary George Shuffler back in the mid-1980's when I was the director of Bluegrass Week at the Augusta Heritage Workshops in Elkins, WV. We arranged for him to be our Guest Master, and I was immediately smitten. George jammed with us on guitar and bass, sang a great bass and baritone, and told wonderful stories about the Stanley Brothers. Particularly moving was to hear George tell of the night that Carter died. That night was obviously still so vivid for him. A big, warm man, George had a knack for making me feel like I had a special connection with him. I am sure that he had this effect on many, many people. Over the years, I looked forward to seeing him at the IBMA conventions, MerleFest, and occasionally at Wintergrass. He always invited me to his birthday parties and sent Christmas cards (though I really think it was George's lovely wife Sue who took care of those things). For George's 80th birthday, Tom Rozum and I recorded and sent him a little song, and apparently he played it over and over at his party.

We were lucky enough to have the great good fortune of playing on stage with George on a handful of occasions, always singing and playing "Will You miss Me When I'm Gone." I can't convey the thrill of hearing George's bass voice and distinctive guitar within our band! It was like being transported to the Stanley Brothers' band! As a member of the band for 17 years, his singing and playing really helped define their sound. I'll tell you I felt bona fide, for sure, when he graced us with his music. One year at MerleFest, he told me that Ralph Stanley asked him to sit in with the Clinch Mountain Boys for "Will You Miss Me," and he turned him down because he was going to play it with us. Maybe that was just the Shuffler charm, but I was certainly more-than-willing to fall for it.

I am grateful that I saw George at the IBMA convention in Raleigh this last September. Though in a wheelchair and definitely slowed down, he was his joking, warm self. My heart goes out to Sue Shuffler and to all of George's family. He was a giant in more ways than height. I loved that guy!

Just finished teaching the harmony vocal class at the CBA Music Camp. 21 students, 3 days, and we ended with "Pathway of Teardrops." Very challenging, and everyone sounded great. I got chicken skin!

The Right Hands and I are happy to be among the many celebrating the life of peace and environmental activist David "Chicken" Nesmith on June 1 at the Freight and Salvage. We played for Chicken last year, and the event was a huge success, a...nd so much fun! I have rarely been in a room so full of affection and positive energy. I will, I'm sure, be singing "I'm In Love With a River Guide" that night.

It's on the loose! American Nomad's new CD, Country Mile, was just released today on my label, Spruce and Maple Music. They've got a very entertaining spread on the American Songwriter website, where you can hear some of the tunes and find ...out "fun facts." You decide whether they're fun or not...

Hassan and Shiloh were a joy to work with on this project, and I am so glad to see it get out there in the world.

I had a great time producing American Nomad's new record, Country Mile, and right now the title track is featured on The Bluegrass Situation's "Song of the Week" section - check it out! From Hassan El-Tayyab: "American Nomad's new album i...s getting love from The Bluegrass Situation! There is a Soundcloud link at the bottom so you can listen to the title track off Country Mile! We have some nice things to say about our producer Laurie A Lewis as well. Check it out will ya!"
