Meet Evans. Every story has two sides. The problem with so many aid programs is that they patronize the people we’re trying to help, by reducing them to “have-nots” and recipients of charity. So often, what makes us feel good doesn’t actually do good for people in need. But we don’t have to abide by what @chimamanda_adichie calls “the danger of a single story.” We can stop. And listen. And build programs that #givework rather than aid, that lift people up in solidarity, rather than relegate them to handouts. That’s what we try to do at @samasource — it’s far from perfect, and we get it wrong sometimes, but I believe that empowering people like Evans through work creates a powerful ripple effect. Money trickles up and out, rather than down. And lives are forever transformed.

After a big anti-fur announcement, @gucci gives to gun control. Badass.

Future dreaming. “The future is an infinite succession of presents, and to live now as we think humans should live, in defiance of all that is bad around us, is itself a marvelous victory.” Howard Zinn’s writings have me thinking a lot about the future these days. For @samasource - How do we create jobs as machines automate more of our daily work? For @lxmiofficial - How long will it take before women stop buying toxic chemicals to put on their bodies and in their homes? When... will #organic and #fairtrade become the norm, rather than the nice-to-have? And when will investors stop pumping insane amounts of capital into unsustainable businesses that don’t drive good in the world? I’m in Europe meeting impact investors — an inspiring bunch. But I’m impatient. Why is this field still so small? Funds that measure *real* impact (poverty measurably reduced, carbon emissions lowered, forests saved...) are few and far between. I believe we can change this if we follow Zinn’s advice and live as we believe we should, rather than succumb to the default option. So go and start a social business to #givework, or get your family/company/friends to buy from one. Share what you learn about inspiring #socialenterprise. And above all, keep the faith! I have that Zinn quote on my office wall.

Back on the road to meet investors and finally found time for a tea
🍵 last year I logged 440,000 miles (
😱) and some of you have been asking for travel hacks...so here you go! 1. Eat like a queen. My Mary Poppins-worthy bag is currently stocked with organic almonds and cashews, a ziplock with @frontiercoop turmeric, cinnamon, and black pepper for on-the-go tea, and @vegasportprotein powder... 2. Exercise like it’s your job. My road indulgence? a @gaiam yoga travel mat (super t...iny) for a luxurious stretch. Followed by my battered, second-hand @rimowa carry-on for in-room wait training
😋 3. Carry something that reminds you of your Why - I never used to do this but lately I carry around a small rose quartz crystal that a friend gave me while I was in the hospital...it’s a reminder of how fragile life is, and how love is the only thing that matters. What’s your favorite travel tip?

What a badass.

And now she wants more women to take to the skies.
Well-being indicators are up all over the world per Carlos Mera. But all these healthy, educated people need jobs. #givework models are critical now more than ever. Council on Foundations CommunityFdnsCanada #NACFsummit
1.5M American families are living on less than $2 a day. And the top Super Bowl ad spot went for $5M...
Every day should start with mariachi! In CDMX for the Council on Foundations annual summit...hoping we can scale Samasource around the world

Nothing more hopeful than a room full of smart social entrepreneurs...one by one, we can make capitalism work for all humans. Grateful for tonight’s Nasdaq Entrepreneurial Center talk
