This exhibition showcases costumes made of everyday upcycled materials, designed and created by Ms Elpie A. Malicsi. As a Filipino domestic helper in Hong Kong, Elpie’s costumes speak to the need for a more inclusive dialogue about sustainability, a dialogue that recognizes the links between sustainability and domestic work. This includes the connections between sustainability and labour rights, decent work and domestic workers’ creative contributions to Hong Kong culture.

This project is supported by the HKU Knowledge Exchange Fund granted by the University Grants Committee.

For more information, please contact Dr. Julie Ham at jham@hku.hk or Ms Merina Sunuwar at merinasu@connect.hku.hk, or visit https://www.facebook.com/SustainableSundayCouture/

These girls are the Ethiopian runners of tomorrow and maybe the photographers too.

We teamed up with Girls Gotta Run Foundation. GGRF is the only non-profit organization in Ethiopia using the national sport of running as an innovative approach to creating safe spaces, ending child marriage and expanding access to secondary school for vulnerable girls. GGRF invests in girls and their families to create long-term paths for self-reliance and financial resiliency.

We believe in the dual power: the power of girls and the power of photography. Support our programs and the women in them by purchasing our photos on Photoshelter. http://ow.ly/3ROL30i5mvl

When we let women and girls speak for themselves...

‘I feel like a lot of people have the preconception about muslim women who wear the hijab as oppressed or forced into it and that they should be very quiet and not have a voice and I feel like I’m challenging that.’

We love this cosplayer from Sunderland who has her own unique voice.

In the week that a female protester - waving her hijab - became a symbol of defiance in Iran, the work of this female photographer is more poignant than ever.

“I applaud the right for any woman to wear the hijab as she chooses,” says Masséus. “But many Iranian women hate compulsory hijab – they see it as a symbol of oppression.” She was struck by the contrast between the oppressive regime and the independent, moder...n women she met there. “They all told me the same thing: we have two faces, one for the outside world to stay safe and one for inside.”

‘I challenged Monica to shoot a couple of police officers walking out of their police station. She confidently walked up to them telling them what we were doing and requested permission to shoot them which they refused.'

'I was pleased to see the confidence Monica had developed in approaching strangers and talking politely about her purpose and even accepting rejection gracefully by thankin...g them for their time.’ Sandeep Dophate, Program Manager

Last month we ran workshops in collaboration with Standard Chartered and Vjjana Amani Pamoja (V.A.P). Monica is a member of the V.A.P Mrembo girls program.

The program seeks to create safe spaces for adolescent girls and young women to share issues on reproductive health, HIV and life skills as well as create employability and entrepreneurship opportunities.

Proud to organise our first programme bringing together domestic workers and university students in Hong Kong to learn #photography and create output highlighting gender issues. We're incredibly humbled by the great turnout of 42 participants and would like to thank CUHK's anthropology department and Edmund Chan for the opportunity to build inter-cultural bonds. We are stronger together.
