The Lion Guardians found Nempatipat, daughter of Selenkay and Nedlie, drinking from a watering hole. The clicking sounds you can hear is the camera as we take pictures of her whisker spots, ears, and other markings to ensure correct identification. ENJOY! Video credit: Tory Shelley

The cub whisperer....

We received a call late last week, our chronic livestock raider Selenkay had just jumped into a boma for the second time in a row. So we quickly set off to reprimand her poor behaviour and tracked her for almost 10kms through tough bushy vegetation. Then when her collar signal grew louder we noticed a movement in a bush beside us. Were these Selenkay’s new cubs? Our view was obstructed by the tangle of bushes they were safely stashed them in. Just as we ...were giving up hope of seeing them, Eric announced that he had one last trick up his sleeve. He proceeded to make a small particular sound and to our surprise and delight one tiny cub immediately popped its head out of the bush to look at him. He made the noise again and just like that all four cubs came out and trotted towards our car, looking expectantly at Eric as though he was their mama!

In January, Stephanie was honored to participate in an "out-of-the-box" thinking workshop focused on coexistence and what innovative ideas could be implemented.

Thank you to RCWP for bringing these top minds together and we look forward to the ideas that may come from the "CoExist" group.

Experts on coexistence with carnivores from across Africa & beyond met in Kenya last week as the ‘CoExist group’, hosted by the RWCP. We were beginning to formulate ideas on what needs to change for people & carnivores to coexist in Africa.

From Jack Brockway post his visit last year.

There is so much to learn from the #Maasai. Living in these concrete jungles, we become disconnected from nature and it becomes very easy to forget that all our actions and consumption has consequences. The Maasai do not have this problem and if/when #MotherEarth decides to wash her face clean, whose skill set will you want to have? Someone who designs computers or that of the awesome Maasai living in and with #nature!?! A bond is born…. Guardian Olubi Mitiaki connects with lioness ‘Selenkay’ for the first time whilst she is tranquilised. In the subsequent years, Mitiaki’s undying commitment has helped keep Selenkay alive during times of conflict.

On community lands, you cannot save lions without serving the community. Here, Guardian Parkesian, has located lions in the nearby vicinity and is duly notifying herders to vacate the area with their livestock to avoid potential conflict.

Looking forward to 2018

As we march forward into 2018, all of us at Lion Guardians are excited about what the year has in store. In addition to our core operations in Amboseli where we continue to focus on maintaining a reduction in lion killing, mitigating conflict, and safeguarding our growing lion population - we are also pleased to share the following key highlights:

*** We will conduct our first non-African non-lion specific knowledge sharing service with an Indian-base...d leopard and tiger conservation NGO at our Resource and Learning Center

*** We hope to begin broad-scale collaboration with two regional conservation organizations to create conservancies and initiate impact monitoring that will provide wildlife connectivity to an essential area of Maasailand.

*** Expand our livestock husbandry work through testing new approaches to addressing lost livestock as well as continuing to work with veterinarians from across the globe to continue to grow our injured livestock assistance project.

*** Participate in local and regional meetings to lead development of the national strategy for lions and spotted hyenas in Kenya (Kenya Large Carnivore Task Force).

And much much more. Please stay tuned to our social media updates for all news Lion Guardians.
