Here's what I just posted on my own FB page...

bit of a delayed check-in here.... was so taken last evening by the extraordinary performance of Michael Nyman's... opera "The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat" by Long Beach Opera (, by the wonderful singers and masterful music direction, by the opportunity to share this experience with great friends, by the celebration of the end of a spectacular season with my LBO family - yay Chadd, Hope, Bill, and especially especially Andreas - and by the simple pleasure of discovering new venues, new menus, new neighborhoods (thank you again, Andreas..) that I completely did not open my smartphone last night to...check in.... And speaking of checking - in or out - if you're anywhere in SoCal you owe yourself the gift of checking out this amazing company. Not at all what you think opera is; and totally what opera can be. Long Beach Opera produces world-class opera at a fraction of the cost of other major opera compoanies, but without making any artistic sacrifices. In fact, LBO... has refused to allow its (relatively) modest budget to be a liability -- incredibly, it has turned it into a strength, by choosing to perform many of its productions in non-traditional venues that bring special meaning to the works that they present. If you love opera -- or if you'd like to learn about and experience opera in ways both new and unexpected -- then buy tickets for at least one performance. I'm confident you will be back for a second, third, fourth . . . . etc. See More

Well done, loved your staging and conceptualization of House of Usher. I came for Phillip Glass and will stay for the season. Very impressed a company outside t...he entertainment capital can make a fresher, bolder and more interesting theatrical experience, bravo! Thanks for taking the risks you did, they all paid off including your fabulous and quirky stage movers. See More

What was trumpet player Niv Toar's official excuse for being 45 minutes late for yesterday's performance? "Stuck in traffic" doesn't really work, since many of had to take the 405 to Long Beach and were able to arrive on time, despite the incorrect directions printed in the LBO brochure. See More

"Floydering." Know the term?

Floyd Norman, the first African-American Animator at Walt Disney Studios who went on to become a Disney Animation legend.

“...We had an Asian artist, a Latino artist, and one from Lithuania. So my being African-American didn’t make me different from anybody else. We were from everywhere, but we were all one thing: artists."

Long Beach Opera presents...

The Perfect American (American Premiere)
Music by Philip Glass
Libretto by Rudy Wurlitzer

A fictionalized account of Walt Disney's final days. He is haunted by his own mortality and boundless ambition. There is more to this icon than simply making dreams come true. With appearances by Abraham Lincoln, Andy Warhol, and Disney's family, this whirlwind contemporary opera is a poetic and tragic story of the American Dream.

"...a great American opera that needs to be seen in L.A. and it is also the only great L.A. opera." - Mark Swed, Los Angeles Times

"It was like an oasis opened up in the opera and in my life." - David Lang, Pulitzer-winning composer

Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Lang has been a Philip Glass fan since high school. But it was a performance of the opera Satyagraha triggered a genuine epiphany.

"I popped the first disc into my Discman (!) and started walking uptown and was shocked." - Nico Muhly

How the music of Philip Glass ignited a creative fire for a young American contemporary composer.

The young composer recalls his teenage discovery of Music In 12 Parts — listening on a Discman while walking in New York — and how it later energized his own compositions.
