The Maryland Farms and Families Act passed unanimously in the 2017 Maryland General Assembly legislative session and was signed by Governor Hogan in May 2017. The bill directly invests in farmers throughout the state and provides funding for low-income families to purchases local fruits and vegetables. The bill will create a grant program that would match farmers market purchases made with federal nutrition benefits, such as SNAP. This would bring additional revenue to local farmers and local produce to food-insecure families. However, Governor Hogan has not provided $500,000 needed for the bill in his 2018 budget. Governor Hogan is prepared to provide $5 billion in corporate welfare tax cuts to Amazon should they chose to build their second headquarters in Montgomery County. Governor Hogan campaigned saying he would support and fight for rural Maryland. Please write and/or call Governor Hogan asking him to make funding the Maryland Farms and Families Act a priority! 410-974-3901 or 1-800-811-8336
