Date: 28th November 2016
Time: 1900-2030
Venue: 32 L. G.03

The conflict over Kashmir has been raging ever since India and Pakistan gained their independence from British rule in 1947. Over the last 69 years, both India and Pakistan have laid a claim to the valley and it remains a point of contention today, with a part of Kashmir being administered by India and a part by Pakistan.

...

The dominant narrative of the conflict has largely been concentrated on whether the valley belongs to India or Pakistan and this, unfortunately, has drowned out the voice of the Kashmiris. While India accuses Pakistan of illegally occupying a part of its territory, Pakistan accuses India of carrying out mass human rights violations in the valley. An otherwise serene and peaceful valley, Kashmir today lies torn apart by conflict. Periodically, peace is shattered by riots and stone pelting, terrorism and arson, ceasefire violations and loss of lives. The 'Kashmiriyat' has been lost.

The question which arises is what do the Kashmiris want? And how can their lives be improved? Can these parties reach a consensus? Is there an end to this conflict?

The LSE SU South Asia Society aims to bring together students from India, Pakistan as well as the voices from within the India and Pakistan administered Kashmir on a common platform to engage and explore possible solutions to the ‘issue’ of Kashmir. It may be noted that while it may have been easier to promote such an event by inviting politicians and academics, we, at the LSE SU South Asia Society believe that it is the students of these countries and the present generation who can rise above politics and power struggles, and offer a perspective which is fresh and doesn’t emerge out of significant political and intellectual investment in the region.

The event will feature three panels (Kashmir, Pakistan and India) and an open public debate. If you wish to be a part of the panel please email:

- Maitreya Thakur: M.Thakur@lse.ac.uk
- Siddharth Sinha: S.Sinha8@lse.ac.uk

Hi everyone!

I come bearing exciting news- sub-committee positions for Nepalese society are now OPEN.
You can email Chandra c.j.bhandari@lse.ac.uk to express your interest in applying for any of the following positions. If there are more people interested we are open to adding more positions. So please apply.

...

The positions available are as follows:
* Marketing Officer
* Educational Officer
* Alumni Relations Officer
* Media and Communications Officer
We have a three member committee so far

President: Chandra: C.J.Bhandari@lse.ac.uk
Treasurer: Praniya: p.rai1@lse.ac.uk
Secretary: Suyash: S.raj-bhandari@lse.ac.uk

I highly recommend that you apply, especially if you want to make a change, or give any new ideas to the team. This is your chance to make a difference.

We organise events that focus on the current affairs of Nepal. For the past two years our main concern was the constitutional deadlock and the political crisis. Now that the constitution has been promulgated we are thinking how the changes can be implemented peacefully. If you have particular ideas for our Annual conference (Nepali Aawaz) that takes place in lent term, you can write to us or apply to join our core committee.
We also organise fundraising events. In 2014 we organised a MO:MO sale fundraising event for Yang-ward foundation that supports single women in rural parts of Eastern Nepal. Last year we raised funds for Pestalozzi International Village Trust, UK that supports two year IB Diploma of students from Nepal and 7 other countries.

We organise a number of social events throughout the year where you will have the opportunity to meet Nepalese and people interested in Nepal. And we have the best food in the world :).

Soon there is an upcoming mo:mo event. If you want to be actively involved please apply.

Hope to hear from you all soon.
