The Greater Dickinson Banquet – Typically held on the Friday closest to February 22 in commemoration of George Washington’s birthday, this event began in 1915 a...s a gathering to celebrate and discuss the future of Dickinson Seminary. The first banquet was attended by ninety-five male students, alumni, and faculty at the Park Hotel in downtown Williamsport. President Benjamin C. Connor and the faculty spoke about the values and goals of the institution and their hopes for the future of the seminary. The banquet quickly became an annual social function with elaborate decorations, fine dining, and orchestra music, but retained the purpose of celebrating “the Spirit of Old Dickinson” and "the Future Dickinson.” The event grew in popularity each successive year, and expanded to include all students, alumni, and friends of the institution. In 1949, after the school became Lycoming College, the banquet was renamed the Greater Lycoming Banquet. The last banquet held in February took place in 1953, and for the next two years the Greater Lycoming Banquet occurred during Homecoming Week. In 1956 the Greater Lycoming Banquet was replaced by the Homecoming Banquet, and later the Alumni Banquet. #FBF #LycomingCollege #CollegeArchives
