To our community,
The GDC accepts harm at face-value. A Fellow Defender from the Madison, WI GDC has harmed Black communities and communities of color. We take responsibility for our part in anti-Black violence, and commit ourselves to transformative processes and growth as an organization beholden and accountable to the community from whom we derive our power.
...We fight for a liberatory politic of abolition and anti-capitalism, and as such seek not to reproduce carceral logics spawned by those systems of oppression. These systems re/create material and psychological harms of fear, alienation, and precarity -- harms whose presence cannot foster processes which are truly transformative or reparative for either those harmed or those who have perpetrated harm.
We will be working closely with Black Abolitionists and other communities harmed as we hold ourselves to account. Our immediate steps are as follows:
1) Recognize, acknowledge, and accept harm committed by our members, and by extension our organization.
2) Study and develop a process of transformative justice to center those harmed and resolve the contradictions of anti-Blackness in our spaces and labors.
3) Commit to material reparations to Black Abolitionist communities.
4) Commit to laboring in support of Black Abolitionist communities.
5) Engage in a process of transformative justice centering those harmed.
We welcome members of our community who have experienced harm to contact us to open a dialogue on how we can hold ourselves accountable.
