Fundamental to his thought is Historical Materialism, the science of history, analyzes the most contradictory aspect of human existence and 'civilization': the contradiction between fulfilling human needs and wants or in Marxist terms; forces of production and inequality in our social relations; the relations of production (or the class struggle).

Ultimately, while the neolithic revolution created surplus food (increase in productive forces) and esentially 'civilization'. But this also created class stratification and ultimately all other inequalities and ideological justifications for these inequalities (heteropatriarchy, and later racism and nationalism etc).

Opposed to all reactionary dogmatic explanations deeming these inequalities 'natural' and all longing's for a primitive life 'outside of technology', Marx envisioned a resolving of these contradictions; Communism. Where forces of production could fulfill human need first and human want, while simultaneously, relations of production could create a non-exploitative society.

Further, all social-sciences could trace their lineages to Marx. to quote L. Althusser at length:

"With his discovery, Marx opened up the ‘continent of history’ to scientific knowledge. He laid the groundwork for a theory constituting the foundation of all sciences that bear on objects belonging to the ‘continent of history’: not just what is known as ‘history’, sociology, human geography, economics and demographics, but also psychology, ‘social psychology’ and, generally the disciplines known as; social sciences’ and , still more generally, all the ‘human sciences’. The fact that these social and human sciences do not acknowledge that Marx‘s theory is their foundation for their true existence as sciences, the fact that they persist in upholding ideological notions which make them semi-sciences, pseudo-sciences or mere techniques of social adaptation is due to the dominant influence of bourgeois ideology, which prevents them from recognizing Marx as the founder of their true theory."

It becomes a question of opening history for the taking. Oppressed people can determine their own fate, design the future and build a better world. Communism is a movement from 'History' to 'Politics'. Where once history was is the dogma of accumulation of fact, history is a self reflection for the human species.

Communism, where the secret of history is unlocked by a classless society; in essence where every person is a politically engaged subject relating to on another at the level of production, political process, and ideological institutions, non-exploitatively, and everyone can consciously make history.
