About Mark
- As much as I enjoy academic writing, condensing my life to a short tidbit has proved challenging. Here's my go at it:
My three great loves in life are politics, food, and studying. In that order.
I completed my first college degree in Sign Language Interpreting at Oakland Community College shortly after graduating high school. I then transferred to Siena Heights University, where I graduated with my bachelor's degree in Sign Language Interpreting in May 2013. I began graduate studies in Fall 2013 at Gallaudet University in Washington, DC, where I completed a Master of Arts in Interpretation with a concentration in Interpreting Research. I am currently a doctoral student at Gallaudet, studying Interpretation, with concentrations in Research and Pedagogy. My research interests currently center around both the linguistic and social aspects of interpreting.
I have worked as a state and nationally certified American Sign Language/English interpreter since 2011. I am self-employed, and I do freelance work in a variety of community settings (postsecondary, healthcare, business/government, etc.). My field is probably the coolest one in the world. Unfortunately, I am currently unable to work as much as I'd like due to my demanding school workload, though I still work as my schedule allows.
On a lighter note, I am a huge fan of both Doctor Who and Harry Potter, and I've been a vegetarian since November 2013. Also, one of my goals in life is to learn ten languages. I've got two down (American English and American Sign Language), and I'm currently working on Brazilian Portuguese.
In any event, feel free to message me, and I'll get back with you as soon as I can.

Just got front row seats to see @[269656317699:274:Amy Goodman], the award-winning journalist, author, and host of @[17414523278:274:Democracy Now!], speak. I also got a signed copy of her newest book, "Democracy Now! Twenty Years Covering the Movements Changing America." Amy is best known for speaking truth to power and, according to the Right Livelihood Award Foundation, "developing an innovative model of truly independent grassroots political journalism that brings to millions of people the alternative voices that are often excluded by the mainstream media."
Amy has greatly influenced the way I — and millions of others — perceive the world through media. As she says, “The media should give us the dictionary definition of static. Criticism. Opposition. Unwanted interference. We need a media that covers power, not covers for power. We need a media that is the fourth estate, not for the state. And we need a media that covers the movements that create static and make history.”
Amy, you inspire me to create static and make history.
