Today I introduced the bipartisan Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act 2.0. The opioid epidemic has been tearing apart communities in Tennessee for well over a decade. President Trump recently declared a national health emergency and it is time for Republicans and Democrats in Congress to follow suit. My heart breaks for families that have lost loved ones because of the opioid scourge. CARA 2.0 will provide an onslaught of resources in addition to the $6 billion of n...ew opioid funding for prevention and law enforcement services that I both fought and voted for as part of the budget agreement President Trump signed into law last February. It also increases criminal penalties for opioid manufacturers. I’m pleased to have bipartisan cosponsors and to once again be working with my colleagues in the House and Senate.
What else does CARA do? It places a three day limit on initial prescriptions for acute pain, provides enhanced first responder training and funds the expansion of specialized courts to treat our nation’s ill-served Veterans.
Mike and I worked together for several years in the House and on the Energy and Commerce Committee. I know him to be a man of integrity. He did a tremendous job protecting our country from foreign threats as Director of the CIA. He has impeccable leadership skills and will represent our country well as head of the State Department. We thank Secretary Tillerson for his service and wish him well.
Further, I applaud President Trump for nominating Deputy Director Gina Haspel to take over at the CIA as its first female Director.
These numbers speak for themselves. This is what happens when you have a businessman in the White House, and Republicans in Congress dedicated to cutting taxes and lifting regulations.
It was a privilege to meet with Nir Barkat, the Mayor of Jerusalem, at the AIPAC reception. We are committed to the longstanding and continuing relationship with our greatest ally in the Middle East, and we eagerly anticipate the transition of the U.S. embassy to Israel's capital.
Today was a really special day. I was so honored to be at the memorial service for Reverend Billy Graham in the Capitol, and to hear Michael W. Smith deliver the musical program. Graham brought the love of Jesus Christ to so many people, and his memory will live on in our hearts forever.
It was so great to meet with the Garden Club of America members. Thank you for what you do in educational outreach, and for caring so deeply about our planet. This is our world, our environment, and it is up to us to take care of it.
Honored to have joined the Citizens for Fort Campbell Breakfast. Fort Campbell played a critical role in getting the budget deal done and return military spending to the appropriate level. It is crucial our nation's war fighters are ready when called upon to get the job done.
As you say your prayers tonight, express thanks for the life Billy Graham led, and how he mentored so many of our nation's leaders. This is a picture of the Capitol Rotunda where he will lay in state.
