September 2016 Update We have an exciting week ahead supporting Emily and Dargun, plus the rest of the GB Young Rider squad, at the European Champs in Italy. The horses left 3 days ago with Parkers Horse Transport, and spent one night in France, one night in Milan, and arrived safely yesterday at the event site in Montelibretti. Emma, our head girl was chosen as one of the 3 grooms to go to the Championships - very exciting for her, and well deserved. Emily and the other 5 riders fly out today to Italy, and I will fly out with Jane, Dargun's owner, on Wednesday in time for the vets inspection. Mum and David are coming out later in the week, plus 2 friends. Fingers crossed the week goes smoothly (and hopefully very successfully!!) I decided, because of being away for a couple of weeks now (off to Lingniere CCI** in France with Em and Cooley Currency the week after Italy) to end the season with Billy, Bobby and Joey - so they are now on a well deserved holiday. Billy and Bobby have now upgraded to Intermediate level, and Joey is not far off. Considering that they have had rather a staggered season because of my neck trouble, they have progressed well. At the last few events with them - West Wilts, Bicton and Treborough they had some good placings, and are feeling pretty established at Novice level. There is lots to look forward to next year with them - progressing and getting them established at Intermediate level, aiming for a CCI* in the spring, running them in some CIC** events, and possibly aiming for a CCI** at the end of the year. Emily and I have covered many miles over the last few weeks trying to find good young horses for owners. We have done 3 German trips, and have found a 5 and a 6 yr old, plus another lovely horse, but sadly it failed the vet. We still need to find a couple more for other owners, so will keep looking. We took Patrick Beresford's Charlemagne out to a jumping show in Belgium, he has got to 3 star level eventing, but is too careful, and as he is such a great jumping horse we feel it is best to try to sell him as a show jumper. Agents saw him jump well in Belgium, and we have had some interest, hopefully it will lead to the right person buying him. Dear Tess produced an embryo by Cevin Z, so Kizzy (this year's foal, who is now turning grey) will have a full brother or sister next year. Zara's 3 recipient mares, who are carrying her offspring, have scanned in foal. I will bring them home after their 60 day scan. We are trying for one more embryo with Zara, with Jaguar Mail semen. I am tired of all this rain and mud.. come on summer, try a bit harder!

The event season has got off to a very staggered start, and my horses have only had 2 runs rather than 4, but at least I have been luckier than some riders who haven't managed any runs yet.
Moreton, our first event of the season had to cancel, but the following week was Tweseldown and between Emily and I we managed to compete 9 horses over the 2 days. My three were very happy to be out eventing again (and... so was I!) they all went well with Joey winning the Open Novice. Sadly our more local event, Aldon, had to cancel after the first day, so my 3 who were entered in the Int and OI sections on the second day didn't run.
Our next event was Burnham Market in Norfolk, a long drive from Devon, but well worth the journey. I ran Billy and Bobby on the Friday in the OI section, and although they both got a bit bogged down in the mud in the show jumping, they both did good tests and went clear but steadily XC. Joey was meant to run in the CIC** the following day, but unfortunately heavy overnight rain meant they had to abandon the event. This weather is so frustrating and disappointing for everyone, especially the poor event organisers who go to such a huge amount of trouble to prepare for their big day.

Emily and I have done a couple of evening talks together and a photoshoot for The Blue Cross, who are the chosen charity at this years Mitsubishi Badminton Horse Trials. I am going to Badminton soon to do the Horse and Hound course walk, it will be very exciting to see what is in store for all the competitors. I would love to be riding there this year but sadly my three haven't quite got to that level yet!

Emily and I did a masterclass for the Mitsubishi Motors Cup at The Unicorn Centre which seemed to be well received, and we also did a lecture/demo for Baileys Horse Feeds at Hartpury.

Our young stock, and the 5 foals who are all living out, are certainly looking forward to their field drying out. They look surprisingly well, despite all the mud and rain. They are having a daily feed of Baileys Stud Cubes and Stud Balancer plus a couple of bales of Marksway Horsehage. I don't rug up the foals but the older ones have Bucas turnout rugs on.

I am sponsored by Gatehouse for my riding hats, and they sensibly insist I wear new ones each year. I wear their Conquest one for the dressage and show jumping phases, and the HS1 for XC. British Eventing are retagging all hats this year to make sure everyone's hats have up to date safety standards.

Sadly Weston Park and Sapey have had to cancel, but we are hopeful that the lovely Belton Horse Trials in Lincs will run next weekend. We have 6 horses entered, 3 each, and plan to stop at Ferdi on the way to polish up our dressage!

It has been all steam ahead from the beginning of January. We are very fortunate to have Becca back with us for a second year, and then we have a new groom called Sophie Benger, who is lovely and settling into the King routine very well. My horses did 3 weeks roadwork, then I started to introduce a bit of schooling. lunging, pole work and then a little jumping at the end of Jan. We have their teeth done by Keith Evans, who is an excellent equine dentist who lives in the Westc...ountry. We also get Richard Stringer, our excellent vet, to get their ‘flu/tetanus boosters done. Gradually we get them clipped and tidy and looking like real event horses again. Emily and I do these things quite differently! I am old fashioned and like to do a hunter clip with their saddle patches and legs left on, whereas Emily likes hers to be clipped out completely, legs and all. She keeps her horses tails full, and trims her manes with scissors to give a straight square look (influenced by working in Germany in a show jumping yard!). I pull my horses manes and tails...although part of me thinks why on earth do I pull out their hair?...but in fact my 3 enjoy having their manes and tails pulled so I feel its okay!

I did quite a bit of teaching in January..2 days at Rectory Farm in Glos, 2 days in Aberdeen and Angus in Scotland, and a single day at Duchy College in Cornwall. Hard work, but the pay is good and I taught some lovely friendly keen riders.

Having returned from a fabulous weeks skiing in Les Houches with a bunch of friends (Freddie my son is working there for the season), it was then time to begin the horses canter work. We canter every 3rd or 4th day and are lucky to be able to use a friendly farmers long sloping grass field. Through Feb we start to go to jumping shows, and have booked in for some dressage lessons with Ferdi Eilberg, who has been my trainer for many years. Lecture/demos, 2 River Cottage evenings, yard visits and evening talks are filling up our Feb diary.

Here is our provisional spring event programme...not long now before the start, WHOOPEE!

HAPPY NEW YEAR! Nick Rule our brilliant farrier came on Jan 2nd and now it’s all steam ahead with 12 horses in work to prepare for the 2018 event season.
I weaned the foals at the end of November, and took the recipient mares back to the Beaufort Embryo Transfer Centre.
The foals are coping well without their mothers, despite the mud! They live out day and night in a big field with plenty of shelter. I have been giving them a daily feed of Baileys Stud Balancer and Stud Cubes..., plus some Marksway High Fibre HorseHage.
We give our fields around the yard a couple of months rest, renting friendly farmers fields for all the horses. I topped and rolled ours with my Logic rotary topper and ballast roller before the ground became too wet. The horses have fresh paddocks for turn out now they are back in work.
I registered all the foals which had to be done by the year end. To enable this the vet came to microchip them and fill out their descriptions, which I sent off with a DNA sample to SHB(GB) for their first passport. I have wormed them and they have had their first flu injection.
Brookleigh, who has had time out following the injury he sustained at Badminton last year, started work at the beginning of Dec, much to his, and Emily’s delight! Emily took Quinn the stallion out to Marcus Ehning’s in Germany (the most stylish show jump rider in the world) where she worked in exchange for some training for 4 weeks pre Christmas. She lived in the lorry, and it was very cold (-4) and snowy!!
Amadeus has sadly been sold to a French rider, as we need to keep selling the occasional one to help the owners.
I finished breaking in Tilly, my 3 yr old, so she is back out and I won’t progress more with her until the summer.
A week away with David before Christmas was such a treat. We went to Kenya spending a few lazy days on the beach, and then visited friends nr Lake Naivasha..wonderful!

We had some terribly sad news yesterday. My dear mummy died peacefully at her home. It was a lovely way to go for her, but a tremendous shock for us. Anybody who was lucky enough to know her will agree what a selfless, kind, generous person she was. She was an angel to so many people, and spent her life helping others. I am so lucky to have had such an inspirational mummy.

Thank you everyone for all your support. Fingers crossed for a happy successful 2018 for us all!
