Michael Baker, working for Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) District 6 under a construction management open end agreement, identified an alternative construction sequence for the project using a Linear Schedule analysis that recovered 10 weeks of a significant schedule delay by setting beams earlier than originally planned.

"How do loads impact the physical plant? The deck, beams, joints, pavement are stressed by heavy vehicles moving closer and closer together," said Richard Dunne (Technical Manager, Structural Engineering at Michael Baker).
Ever wonder what it’s like to be a civil engineer?
“A typical day for me varies considerably, splitting my time between on-site and in the office. This past week I was inspecting project work, developing a Life Cycle Assessment Analysis, reviewing items with the contractor, overseeing tests with the client, and creating plans. It’s a great career, but the most rewarding part is seeing the final product. Engineers often design one project, and move on to the next, but I have had the opportunity to be out in the field during construction and at project completion. If you’re looking to pursue a career in engineering, my advice is to never lose the desire to learn.” -Adam Walkowiak, Civil Engineer - Construction, Pittsburgh, Pa.
