Columbus discovered Venezuela in 1498, and these early explorers named the country “Venice” because they found inhabitants living in stilt houses in lakes.
I imagine, even after more than 500 years, the villages they encountered bore some resemblance to this city in Lake Maracaibo.

In 2008, I traveled abroad for the first time. Country of choice? Venezuela.
With a small @lumix point and shoot, I spent weekdays practicing Spanish and weekends exploring the diverse country.
By boat, we passed this family who lived on the Catatumbo River, a feeder to the great Lake Maracaibo.
