【Long post】
Should've announced this a while ago BUT I just put my tracks from Freespace Mixtape Vol. 1 on my Bandcamp! (The mixtape has been out for a month I just haven't gotten around to sharing it lmao.) It's available for streaming for now, will update when they are download-able.

It's been v humbling working with industry veterans and recording at some of the nicest studios I've ever been in. And it's such an honour being on the same album as indie musicians that I respect and admire. Thank you Kung, Michelle and Anthony for making this happen. And countless others who made sure things are smooth sailing. Ty to Fung Yat Hei Frankie Vinc Chan Atlas Iu Sai Yu Popper Billy for doing this with me.

"Same Words" is roughly based on my experiences as an immigrant in the US. The past 8 years have been a perpetual process of moving, finding home and being displaced. I am grateful for the ties made. I grief those broken. If you've gone through similar experiences, I hope it brings you some consolation.

"Flesh and Bones" is about a person I know who used to work at a gentleman's club. It's not the kind of story we get to hear about first hand every day. There were some dramatisations but I think it's all in all a rather honest portrayal. Wasn't thinking too much when I penned the song, but I hope the songs make you re-evaluate your perceptions of sex workers. Regardless of how or why they ended up in the industry, they deserve to have their rights respected.

This is a long way of me saying I hope you like this. Please share if you do

cn: colonialism, appropriation

As I get more involved with different local communities, be it social justice, arts or entrepreneurial, the word "tribe" comes up a lot in conversations. "Find your own tribe." While yes I understand what that means, it never sits well with me.

This article is detailed (but straightforward I promise) and it explains clearly why you might want to reconsider using this particular word to describe the community building or organising that you do. T...here are perfectly fine substitutes that aren't built on and continue to perpetuate colonialist myths and stereotypes.

The article talks about Zambia, and references Native Americans. Even though a lot of HongKongers are removed from this social/ cultural context, it's worth considering that a lot of our neighbouring countries, in the process of unifying a nation state, have destroyed indigenous communities. History is never that far from your front door.

//
"When the general image of tribal timelessness is applied to situations of social conflict between Africans, a particularly destructive myth results. Stereotypes of primitiveness and conservative backwardness are also linked to images of irrationality and superstition. The combination leads to portrayal of violence and conflict in Africa as primordial, savage and unchanging. This image resonates with traditional Western racist ideas and can suggest that irrational violence is inherent and natural to Africans."

Last week at Human Library event hosted by HKU Amnesty International Club.

I don't think of myself as a particularly interesting person, but I'm happy to share what I know, "educate" when I'm capable. Huge thank you to the organisers for having me, and for putting the event together.

If a child is old enough to make fun of another child for wearing the same clothes repeatedly or having stains/holes in their clothes, that child is old enough ...to learn about classism, poverty, and wealth inequity.

If a child is old enough to make fun of another child for being Black or brown or for having dark skin, that child is old enough to learn about racism and colourism.

If a child is old enough to make fun of another child for being trans and/or queer, that child is old enough to learn about transphobia and homophobia and the construction and complexity of gender and sexuality.

If a child is old enough to make fun of another child for living in a body that works/moves/looks/processes differently than their own, that child is old enough to learn about ableism and disabilities and neurodiversity.

If a child is old enough to make fun of another child for being different, that child is old enough to learn about difference. It is not fair, nor is it just, that children get to “wait until they're older” to learn about the experiences of others and the impact of the harm they cause while many of those children they hurt don't get to “wait until they're older” to feel the effects. And some of those children don't even "make it to older" at all so no. Children can learn. Children need to learn. And it is our responsibility to model and to teach.

A write-up about the local poet by Karen Cheung for Still / Loud. I haven't been much of a poetry person, not since I did English Lit in high school. Recently read his award-winning poetry collection "Crevasse" and it's one of the most powerful works I've read, especially as a young queer ESL artist writing English songs. Heading to a Hong Kong International Literary Festival event this afternoon with him as one of the speakers and am super stoked

Oh and the illustration is by yours truly.

“I think the label of ‘Hong Kong’ writer or poet isn’t just a geographical indication. I think it’s that on some level, this location has to have given you the nutrients for writing.”
