Check out what the folks at De Anza College are doing to support undocumented students!
This is devastating to say the least. At least 2,000 children have been separated from their parents in the last few weeks... even children as young as a few months old!!
I can only imagine what these parents and children are going through. As a parent, you would do anything for your child to be safe. We can’t turn a blind eye to the cruelty and injustice that this administration is enabling. Each second these families are separated is one second too long and we should all be infuriated by what’s happening right in front of our eyes.
Check out our last post on the Navigating Higher Education series written by Maria, undocumented college student!
"My experience as a transfer student was not effortless because I navigated the higher education world without much support. I want undocumented students who are struggling to graduate from community college to prepare themselves for their next step in their academic career. Before transferring, make sure you obtain your associate’s degree. The process can be daunting, but it can be accomplished. Do not give up! You will achieve your dream. Remember that everyone reaches their goals differently!"
"Two years after graduating, at the end of Fall, I finally got a work permit. By then enrollment was closed for the current school year at the local university, so I applied to a community college for the upcoming Spring semester. The plan was to transfer to the university the following semester. I was so excited and relieved because my dream of continuing my education was finally coming true. Then, that November, my father passed away of a sudden heart attack. Not only was i...t the worst time because I lost one of the most important people in my life, but also because the person that petitioned for my legal residency was now gone, making my legalization process stop on its tracks. I consulted with a couple of lawyers and they all said I had to start the process again and have my mother petition for my siblings and me. A process that would again be very lengthy."

"In general, I would say my university campus is accepting of undocumented students, immigrant students, students of color and there are a couple of student-led support groups available for undocumented students. But I would also say that the campus still has some work to do in terms of creating more scholarships and grants specifically for undocumented students, especially when it comes to supporting undocumented students that struggle with issues on top of being undocumente...d that interfere with their education, which brings me to my next point…
I used to be homeless and undocumented for the majority of my freshman college year. I struggled with feelings of not being good enough because of being from a low socioeconomic status, experiencing homelessness in college, being undocumented and a first generation college student all at the same time."
fyi- The deadline has been extended to June 8th. Don't miss out!

Don’t miss out- Here are the resources, scholarship & job opportunities, and immigration-related news featured this month at My Undocumented Life blog!
"In June 2015 I enrolled into community college. It was difficult enrolling because the online application required a SSN number and considered me a non-resident. I had to go into the admissions office over ten times to have everything sorted out but immediately I began to see support for undocumented students at the community college. There were flyers for immigration forums, DACA assistance, legal and financial help all over the school walls and classrooms. The financial as...pect was also incredible. As a DACA student, I was eligible for the BOG waiver and paid between $20-$40 dollars per semester during my entire time at community college for over 18 units! I was able to focus on my education and saved the money I was making from my jobs."

"The most important thing throughout the college application process is to not give up and to keep the end goal in mind. It helps to surround yourself with a supportive community. There was a point where I no longer wanted to apply to college anymore because I thought it just would not happen for me. But thanks to my family, friends, and mentors I decided to continue applying and through hard work, guidance, and determination, I can finally say that I’ll be attending Eastern Connecticut State University this Fall. Allow your undocumented status to push you rather than hinder you and you’ll be surprised at just how much you can achieve."
