How often do we keep doing the same old thing, until we finally learn the lesson? This well known poem by Portia Nelson sums it up well:

Chapter I
I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk....
I fall in.
I am lost ... I am helpless.
It isn't my fault.
It takes me forever to find a way out.

Chapter II
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don't see it.
I fall in again.
I can't believe I am in the same place.
But it isn't my fault.
It still takes a long time to get out.

Chapter III
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it is there.
I still fall in ... it's a habit.
My eyes are open.
I know where I am.
It is my fault.
I get out immediately.

Chapter IV
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.

Chapter V
I walk down another street.

When on conference calls I’ve noticed how important it is to make sure you are clearly heard and can hear clearly.

Any break-up or difficulty picking up what is being said is often a reflection of the microphone set-up: Too close to you and we get distortion or breathing, too far away and we get office noise or cannot heard.

This is especially noticeable when someone is using a simple in-line mic and ear pods (often in conjunction with a mobile phone). These by definition ...are relatively simple and designed to pick up sound nearby, and often pick up rustling noise from the cable or from clothing.

A good headset (e.g. Plantronics), or noise cancelling (e.g. Bose) are now my preferred tools, rather than the in-line mic.

If you are using a softphone, bear in mind that the laptop memory and/or your internet bandwidth may cause cut-out, especially if you are also running a webex or similar at the same time. You will not hear the cut-out, but your audience will!
