"@[10606591490:274:TIME]'s word-free cover is a textbook example of the phrase "a picture is worth a thousand words."

The story that accompanies this cover, inside the pages of the magazine, could very well be out of a spy novel, but instead it's our reality:

"...the Russia specter continues to descend from several directions on the executive mansion. Anger at U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions' decision to recuse himself from the investigation led Trump to tweet a false accusation that President Obama had wiretapped his campaign at Trump Tower. Trump has never given up that claim, even as evidence compounded against it. Instead he has argued that the entire Russia-meddling investigation is a sham--and that "wiretapping" can mean things not found in the dictionary--even railing at a televised hearing in the presence of TIME reporters on May 8. Three days later, the President admitted that Comey's pursuit of the Russia investigation played a role in his dismissal, after first announcing to the world that he was only acting on the recommendation of his Deputy Attorney General, who faulted Comey's handling of Hillary Clinton's emails.

All these claims have put the country and its caretakers on notice."

He was as gracious as you would imagine him to be, but we were also struck by his level of social intelligence -- humble enough to know how lucky he had been early in his career, and wise enough to know what it means to consistently work hard and challenge yourself. During our time together, Dan asked Josh what dreams he still wanted to pursue, given how many peaks he had already reached. Without hesitation, Josh told us one day he hoped to have the opportunity to perform on a stage on Broadway. Two years later, he is up for best leading actor in a musical. Calling Donald Trump a "whack job", former Clinton campaign chief John Podesta rips the president after a Trump tweet. Via The Hill.

As we get a look at President Trump with Russian President Vladimir Putin there wasn't even a hint of trouble. No mention of election meddling and not much tension to detect. In fact it seemed quote the opposite as Trump said:

"President Putin and I have been discussing various things. I think it's going very well. We have had very, very good talks. We are going to have a talk now and obviously that will continue. We look forward to a lot of positive things happening between... Russia and the United States and for everybody concerned. It's an honor to be with you."

We aren't sure why the President would be honored to meet with a man who may have taken part in hacking a US election and as our Dan Rather said this AM:

"The first thing President Trump did when meeting Russia’s Putin in a social gathering in Germany today was shake his hand warmly, then pat him fondly on the back. There it was and remains for the world to see.
All indications are that Putin helped orchestrate an attack on the sovereignty of the United States during the last U.S. election and has made similar moves in other Western counties, seeking to undermine confidence and stability in democratic institutions and ideals. Now he gets a pat on the back from the leader of the free world. It was a disturbing if not sickening display."

President Trump is still insisting Mexico will pay for a border wall. At the same time he's also acting like he's now chummy with Mexico's president. We have to wonder whether President Nieto would agree?

Here's more from the Associated Press:

President Donald Trump is hailing Mexico’s president as his “friend” in their first face-to-face meeting.

...

Trump met with President Enrique Pena Nieto on the sidelines of an international summit in Hamburg, Germany, Friday.

Pena Nieto was scheduled to be among Trump’s first international White House guests but abruptly canceled the visit after a public spat over Trump’s proposed border wall.

Trump maintains that he will build the border wall to keep drugs and criminals out of the U.S. — although those plans still remain unclear. He said Friday that he “absolutely” wants Mexico to pay for the wall.

Pena Nieto insists Mexico will not pay for the wall.

Trump said, “it’s great to be with my friend the president of Mexico”

Pena Nieto said he hopes to continue a “flowing dialogue.”

Of all the GOP senators who returned home for the 4th of July recess, only one has held an unscreened town hall. The Washington Post reports on Jerry Moran's reception at a meeting with constituents in deep red western Kansas where Donald Trump received more than 70% of the vote.

"Until this year, the voters who cast those ballots had confidently favored repealing the ACA. Like Trump, Moran ran on “full repeal,” claiming to be the first Republican member of Congress to do so....

...On Thursday, Moran took another tone. He did not describe the task facing Republicans as repeal; it was “repair, replace, whatever language people are using.

Pressed by activists and voters, Moran said that he did not want to cut back Medicaid. “I have concern about people with disabilities, the frail and elderly,” Moran said. “I also know that if we want health care in rural places and across Kansas, Medicare and Medicaid need to compensate for the services they provide.”

The Education Secretary should be a champion for education, right? Tell that to the 18 states suing Betsy DeVos.

POLITICO reports:

Eighteen states and the District of Columbia have filed suit against Education Secretary Betsy DeVos over her delay of regulations meant to provide new protections for federal student loan borrowers, particularly those at for-profit colleges.

...

The lawsuit, led by Massachusetts and joined by 18 other Democratic attorneys general, accuses DeVos of illegally delaying the regulations, which were finalized by the Obama administration and had been set to take effect on July 1. The rules made it easier for defrauded student loan borrowers to have their loans forgiven. They also prohibited colleges from requiring students to resolve complaints through arbitration rather than in court.

How do the Democrats change the balance of power in Congress in 2018? Party officials are fielding a number of military veterans to run.

On America’s birthday, this article from The Atlantic comes as a reminder that our nation remains strong because of its ability to absorb people from all different origins to one united cause. To some extent, we are all immigrants who have found a reason to band together in America. Recently, Donald Trump has considered reneging on a promise from the Obama administration that allowed immigrants to become citizens as a reward for serving in our military. Ever since the campaign, Trump has pushed anti-immigrant rhetoric, suggesting those who enter our borders are not equally dedicated to American values. But if fighting for our country is not enough for immigrants to prove themselves as American citizens, what is?

Immigrants have been part of the armed forces since the Revolutionary War. The administration is considering ending a program that grants some of them citizenship in exchange for their service.

Salon highlights how Betsy DeVos is turning the Department of Education onto a more corporate-friendly path and, in the process, creating the potential for a crisis for those with student loan debt. Many students mistake loans taken out from the Federal Family Education Loan Program for having an extra level of legitimacy because they are issued by a government program, while in reality, they’re private loans given by profit-driven companies. In fact, back in 2008, the FFELP ...took a page out of Lehman Brothers’ book and started bundling loans together to discreetly sell them to private corporations that charge crushing interest rates. To make matters worse, although the Department of Education previously offered borrowers working in public service for at least 10 years some amount of loan forgiveness, Betsy DeVos recently decided to void those agreements. So, in other words, the Education Department told some people they didn’t have to pay a percentage of their student loans, only to come back later and rescind the offer. If the Federal Student Loan program continues on its current path, we could end up with a situation on par with the housing crisis.
