A group of services in Melbourne’s North and West 12 months ago discussed a rolling boycott of dodgy accommodation providers as it launched the report, 'A Crisi...s in Crisis'. Yesterday we received a phone call informing us that the rolling boycott is now formal policy, one that has a double edge. It means that those who are in crisis will not be subjected to accommodation that is substandard, unsafe and unhygienic which is fantastic, people should not have been sent there in the first instance.
This is complicated by the fact that across Victoria, there are only 423 government-funded crisis beds. This is catastrophic, especially when on any given night there are approximately 330 rough sleepers just in the City of Melbourne !!! So to make up for the significant shortfall in accommodation homelessness services have been forced to purchase rooms in low-end hotels and private room houses. The new policy withdraws this option making life difficult for the worker who is tasked with finding a bed for their client. Backpackers charge a weekly rate of $150 to individuals seeking accommodation and gouge $50 a night from services. This is blatant price gouging. The Palms in Footscray accounted for nearly 20 percent of the total $2.5 million spent by the network on emergency accommodation in 2017, about $500,000. It charges between $90 and $120 per night. The sick and sorry state of support for those who are hit most by the fucking exploitation inherent in fucking capitalism.

It's been over two months since Police and the City of Melbourne forced rough sleepers away from shelter on Flinders St, with the excuse that renovations along the street were about to start. Not even preliminary works have started in that time. It's clear that this scaffolding, in the way it's built with fine mesh, isn't about work commencing but about literally locking people out of a place to sleep. Meanwhile 80k properties are empty in Melbourne and the government is refusing to build more housing for people with no other options. We asked Brandon James what he thinks of the scaffolding - he didn't pull any punches.
