Norm's Coffee BarCoffee Shop in Newton, Kansas
☘️☕️🎉🏀 It’s been a fun week watching you all vote for your favorites and seeing which drinks have advanced to the final rounds! By winning vote, “The Railer” (caramel mocha with whipped cream and black and gold sprinkles! 🖤💛🚂) is the 2018 drink of champions!!! As a St. Patty’s Day special, tomorrow all Railer’s (hot, over ice, or frozen!) will be 17% off!!! We can’t wait to see you in your green! 👒☘️🍵💚 #NormsCoffeeBar #CoffeeCommunityConnection
Who wants to donate one of these to Norm’s? It’s for the kids! 😂 Ok, maybe it’s for the adults, but still... If you’re old enough, what was your favorite arcade game to play growing up? Mine was Galaga, for sure!
We’ve had the Concordia Tennis team hanging out with us this week while they’re in Newton for a tournament! Girls, you’re the sweetest! We love having you and your fan-club here! 👏🏼🎾☕️
Hey, Newtonians! I just wanted to post an awesome reminder that your coffee (or other beverage of choice! 😉) and brunch purchases are funding our ability to have each of these (plus about 40-50 more!) precious kids in our safe space each afternoon— giving them a free snack and intentional time with our mentor volunteers. We believe that if we can intentionally invest into these Santa Fe students, and continue those relationships with them through graduation, we will see the class of 2025 have a higher graduation rate, thus positively impacting many other facets of our community! So, from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU! I’m loving the relationships I’ve built with all of you, and the relationships I’m building because of your investment into our community!
Local artists are so special to us!!! Did you know that we regularly host local art in our space? Last night we had live music (and a PACKED HOUSE!), but we also have three really cool locals sharing their talents at Norm's right now!
Cassandra Schmidt has a photography exhibit this month and she has some amazing prints for sale! At 3 for $15, these will make wonderful Mother's Day gifts,. So don't miss out on getting a series today!
Sara Lewis is featuring a variety of ar...t this month as well! Her exhibit includes paintings and photography! All of her items are individually priced.
Local author Troy Rasmussen has published his first book - The Shopkeepers Journal - and we have it for sale! Come check out excerpts from this book and pick up a copy!
Ok, friends. No one guessed it today, we had some close guesses though. Come on in tomorrow morning (7am-12pm) and if you tell the cashier the correct number of coffee beans... YOUR DRINK IS FREE! 🎉🎉🎉🎉
I'm sharing this personal post today because it's my heart and it's our vision for this amazing little coffee bar in downtown Newton. Thanks for supporting this business and buying your morning coffee with us - and thank you for helping us love Newton well!
It's too soon to share my full heart about what happened yesterday, but as I talked with Amy about the school shooting this morning as I took her to school. Th...rough tears (hers and mine), we agreed that there is something each of us can do...
I've already heard it said that the accused gunman was a "loner". Let's think for just a second what that word actually indicates:
I told Amy this morning that each and every person that inflicts this injury and trauma on others has, at one point, been a 5th and 6th grader.
And then the tears started.
This is why we do what we do. Our world is filled with loneliness. If we can engage sixty (60) 5th and 6th graders a day and remind them that they are NOT alone and that they DO matter and that we are here FOR them - can we maybe invade the loneliness that some of them are feeling?
But it doesn't stop with the 5th and 6th graders! Every day we get to continue building this community at Norm's. A safe place. An encouraging place. A place people want to come and share their GOOD news; a place for people to come share their hard times.
Yes. We are running a "coffee shop" here. And it's a great place to get an amazing cup of coffee. But our vision is so much greater than that. Our desire is to build a community and to build connection.
There are no "loners" at Norm's.
Some think that our after-school time is just chaos. I am going to push back on that every opportunity I can. The students that join us are finding community and connection in this little 3,700 sq. ft. of real estate. Sometimes I have to ask kids to leave because they are making it an un-safe place for other students. Even in that, the others see that we value one another here. No exception.
Little glimpses of the Kingdom.
We were listening to Ben Rector's song "More Like Love" in the car this morning and I think his lyrics are a good way to end this post:
This whole world is spinning crazy
I can't quite keep up
It's the one thing around here
That we don't have quite enough of
So I just wanna look a little more like Love
