It was thrilling to sit and watch the tabulations in the first statewide ranked-choice voting process in history. It was nerve-wracking too—since we had a path to victory, though it was narrow.

In the end, after four rounds, Janet Mills emerged as the Democratic nominee. I congratulate her on her victory and will enthusiastically get behind her this fall!

I also want to take a moment to congratulate you.

Together, we built a movement – not a moment.

Together, we established that Mainers are ready for Clean Elections and to get money out of politics and put people back in charge.

Together, we affirmed the importance of single-payer health care, 100% renewable energy, and a fair tax code.

Together, we demanded respect for tribal sovereignty.

Together, we fought to ensure that our groundwater is a public trust, not a corporate giveaway.

Together, we showed that small farmers and local food are a key to our economic recovery.

Together, we demonstrated that women can and must lead.

As I traveled from one corner of the state to the other (and stopped everywhere in between), what I heard most often was, "Your campaign gives me hope again."

Hope that we can do the right thing.

Hope that positive campaigning works.

And proof that kindness and enthusiasm and optimism and love inspire people and can be part of politics.

We are not done. We have a beautiful state full of extraordinary people, and we have a tremendous opportunity now to continue to advocate for the things that Mainers want and need to thrive.

I'm asking you to get behind Janet in November. There are thousands of hungry children and people without health care who are depending on it.

What's next for me? I'll continue to work for a better Maine. It's what I've always done. And I will continue to be in touch. We will prevail, but we have much work still to do.
