Gun Buyback Moved to December 26th to Provide Angelenos an Opportunity to Take Guns Off Our Streets

LOS ANGELES – Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck, and Deputy Mayor for Gang Reduction and Youth Development Guillermo Cespedes announced today the locations for the Citywide Gun Buyback program aimed at reducing the levels of gun violence in Los Angeles. The Gun Buyback was moved from its traditional May date to Wednesday, December 26th in response to the Newtown, Conn., tragedy.

"Cities and states must join with the federal government to do everything we can, as quickly as we can, to keep our communities safe," said Mayor Villaraigosa.  "It is absolutely critical to provide Angelenos with concrete actions they can take today to make our City safer tomorrow."

An initiative of the Mayor's Gang Reduction and Youth Development Office (GRYD) and the LAPD, the Gun Buyback will reward the voluntary surrender of firearms while engaging the community towards a common goal of reducing gun violence. In partnership with the LAPD and numerous community and faith-based organizations, the Gun Buyback effort will secure two neutral locations in the City where individuals can surrender their firearms—no questions asked.

In exchange for the firearm, the individual will receive a Ralphs gift card. The cost per firearm will depend on its type, up to $200 for assault weapons as specified in the State of California and up to $100 for handguns, rifles, and shotguns. The LAPD Gun Unit will be on site to determine the type of classification of the firearm surrendered.

The Gun Buyback Program has collected nearly 8,000 firearms from across the City.  The GRYD office is working with the LAPD, media partner KCBS/KCAL, and numerous community organizations to plan, outreach, and raise donations for the event.

The Gun Buyback Program will be held at the following two locations from 9:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. on Wednesday, December 26, 2012:
