Featured: The Parenting Roundabout Podcast, part 2 of 3
In part 2 of this week’s edition of “Featured Podcasters”, the four parenting writers of “Parenting Roundabout” - Terri Mauro, Catherine Holecko, Amanda Morin, and Nicole Eredics discuss how they handle differences in parenting philosophy and what their own kids think of their show.
3. You all talk and write a lot about parenting? Any differences in parenting philosophy? Disagreements?
AMANDA: For a group of opinionated parenting writers, we are surprisingly respectful of each other's views. We get that everyone's life and experience is different. So, we may have differences in philosophy, but we don't try to convince anyone theirs is wrong. And sometimes we just don't talk about hot-button issues. That's just good life advice for staying friends!
TERRI: I think we have a “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy about hot-button parenting issues that might cause us to have confrontations with each other and with our listeners. (Though we did get shot at on Twitter for saying that perhaps an hourlong bedtime routine is not a parent’s greatest joy, so who knows what’s a hot button anymore?) Our show isn’t about people yelling at each other over differences of opinion. We have Facebook for that.
[We liked this question so much we used it as an episode topic, and not just because we were desperate for topics that morning. You can listen at https://player.fm/1ZEDFt]
4. Do your kids know about or ever listen to your podcasts? How do they react?
CATHERINE: My kids know that I podcast but they have not listened, which is juuuuust fine with me. I don’t say anything hurtful but I do get to gabbing with my friends and that’s just for me. And our lovely subscribers, of course!
NICOLE: My kids know about the podcast but haven’t listened to our conversations. My daughter used to tune in just to hear the intro music she wrote for Parenting Roundabout in our early days of podcasting :)
TERRI: I have Nicole’s daughter’s intro music as my ringtone now, so it lives on. My kids don’t listen to the podcast after it’s recorded, but they are quite often my live audience as I broadcast from my state-of-the-art studio on a table in the middle of my living room. So I can’t even ask for something to be edited out later -- I have to not say it in the moment.
AMANDA: My kids know, but they only listen under duress. My husband is our audio engineer, so we often hear the podcast being magically edited through speakers in the living room/studio. Most of the time whatever I say about my kids is stuff I would say right to them anyway, so it's not a big deal if they do listen. They may not like it, but they can't deny it. Just like in person.
