Capito Capitol Update
Girls Rise Up!
This week Senator Capito took her West Virginia Girls Rise Up initiative to Harrison County. Senator Capito started the program in 2015 to empower young women through the avenues of education, physical fitness and self-confidence. In the years since Senator Capito has taken the program around the state speaking with fifth grade girls about women in leadership and the importance of working to achieve goals. “It’s clear to me that these students are dedicated to setting new goals, working toward them, and achieving their dreams. I hope they will continue to be inspired to set the bar high and to encourage others to do the same,” said Senator Capito “I can’t wait to see all of the wonderful things these young women accomplish in the years to come.” Senator Capito shares stories about her life with the students and then encourages them to write down work and life goals. Hitting The Trail
In a recent sit down with Jake Zuckerman of the Charleston Gazette-Mail Senator Capito discussed her reelection bid for the US Senate. “I think I’ve shown myself to be listening to my constituents — my fellow West Virginians — to things that are important to them: jobs, the opioid crisis, broadband, infrastructure,” [Senator Capito] said. “I’m placed well in my committees to be effective. I’ve been able to reshape the appropriations process, as much as you can without earmarks, to favor some of the projects we have in West Virginia.”
“I’ve been working on broadband increase, I’ve been working on jobs and economy, the tax bill we passed I think ended up raising wages and increasing jobs in West Virginia,” she said. “I want to build on that.”
Their discussion covered a broad range of topics including healthcare, immigration, the opioid crisis to broadband. Check out the full interview here:
On Target
The U.S. House of Representatives this week passed their version of the Senate’s Target Practice and Marksmanship Training Support Act. Senator Capito introduced the bill in the Senate and welcomed passage of the House version saying, “Hunting and shooting sports are important to many West Virginians as sources of recreation and economic growth. By improving coordination at the federal, state, and local levels, our bipartisan legislation will help create and maintain shooting ranges so that even more people in our state and across the country can responsibly take part in these activities. I’m glad to see the House pass this bill and look forward to President Trump signing it into law soon.”
