Vampyr offers an interesting moral problem throughout the game: as a doctor, it is my duty to save the lives of these people. But, as a vampire, I am obliged to sacrifice some to survive. Who should I kill, how will I know who should live, and who should die? You’ll gain experience throughout combat in the game, but also from feeding on London’s inhabitants. However, both will yield very different results, as explained below!
Set in London, 1918, Vampyr promises to offer a unique and deeply immersive experience, and a strong and engaging narrative steeped in vampire mythology.
You are Dr. Jonathan Reid, a newly formed vampire torn between the Hippocratic Oath he swore as a doctor, and the bloodthirsty need to kill due to the monster within.
While London suffers from the Spanish Flu pandemic, your first reflex as a doctor would be to help and heal people… but it will be impossible for you to ignore your new-found hunger.
It will be impossible for you to ignore you inner, violent, nature of Vampyr
As a Vampyr, you have to accept you need to sacrifice people to survive. Feeding on people is one basis of character progression, as it will yield greater rewards than combat throughout the game. Learn new supernatural Vampyr powers and talents that will be useful in persuasion, locomotion, survivability, and combat. You’ll have to balance your desire to grow stronger, with your oath to help those afflicted by the flu.
So the dilemma that’s offered to you isn’t “should I kill people?” but more “who should I kill?”, or rather, “who deserves to die”. And this decision won’t be without consequence. Killing one person will create a rippling effect on London’s ecosystem - both you and immediate associates of that person will have to live with both the repercussions and their death on your conscience.
The fewer humans in London, the more overrun with monsters and scoundrels her streets will be. Sparing the living may grant fewer immediate rewards, but it will improve the lives of London’s people as the city is ravished by disease and monsters.
Decide to feed on a renowned doctor from the city hospital, and progressively see the health condition of the patients drop.
Every life saved and every life taken by Reid will have deadly ramifications to London and the people around it. When Vampyr releases in 2017, you’ll will be asked: how far are you prepared to go?
Vampyr is coming in 2017 on PS4, Xbox One & PC.
