I was never a fan of bottom watering my potted plants. Always felt it was too much work and maintenance and the results (to me anyway) were not good enough to justify the effort. Well now the scale may be tipping in the other direction. My friend Harvey in California came up with this ingenious automated method of bottom watering. Looks to be fairly low cost and efficient. But I think it's separated from other flood type systems that I've seen because of it's adaptability. Large or small scale, hooked in series, large pots, small pots; I guess your only limited by space. Nice idea Harvey. Thank you for sharing.

Presenting my creation, an automated bottom watering system for our potted trees with Wi-Fi controls and remote camera surveillance! Three years in the mental ...design process, 3-4 weeks of construction.

I've included 15 photos below of the construction process and numbered them in order since Facebook probably will not show them in correct order.

So I'm on LBI walking down to the beach with the family when I spot a beautiful fig tree loaded with ripe figs. Almost all of the pale green figs were bent over and hanging heavy. Front door open; people inside; of course I had to stop. Yelled to the family that I'd catch up and it brought someone right to the door. I met Sylvia, a beautiful older woman that hardly spoke English. My Italian is poor but was able to tell her that her fig tree is beautiful. She called her ...daughter Danielle and her grand-daughter, who was holding her great-grandaughter to help translate. Slvia asked if I was Italian. I told her yes and we were off to the races. Sylvia's late husband Tony had planted the fig tree here. Tony passed away this past December. She said that her husband took care of everything for her, including the many other varieties of figs at their other home in NJ. She said the figs are all from their hometown of Abruzzo, Italy. They are all in-ground and never protected for winter. Sylvia said this variety is earliest out of all the varieties and she's been eating figs for a few weeks now. That's a winner in the northeast! We all talked figs, family and food for about 30 min. She offered me a branch and I told her that I'd be honored to grow her beautiful fig tree. So I walked away with half a dozen cuttings, a bowl of figs for the family, and some new found friends. So happy to have met Sylvia and her extended family. They put a big smile on my face today! Grazie Sylvia!

This is the first ripe fig from the variety dubbed SS Sandy. My own cuttings did not do well and two rooted 1 gal trees were gifted to me by Coop last season. One of them produced this. Honey flavor. Great texture. Tasted like a young fig though and probably needs another 2 years before it will produce knock-out figs. But it's great that she produced a ripe breba in NYC by July 10. That's a keeper here by any standard.

I have a wicked love/dislike relationship with Jolly Tiger. It gets overgrown with non-variegated growth quickly. If neglected for too long the beauty of the tree is hidden. I have to walk by it constantly and dislike it more and more as the beautiful variegated leaves are hidden from view. Until I finally grab the pruners and spend some Q time. Then it's beautiful again. Makes me smile and feel good every time!

After 7 or 8 hot days (over 100F, 40-43c), I decided to flood irrigate my orchard and give a quick tour of some of our 348 varieties.

I've never written anything about our citrus trees. In addition to our wonderful collection of figs we have full grown Blood Orange, Golden Nugget Tangerine and Improved Meyer Lemon. You can see them in the cover photo above, in the corner of the deck. They were gifts from a very prominent fig grower. This past spring and summer they put on loads of fruit. We harvested about 2 dozen Meyer Lemons before taking our citrus for winter boarding at Silva Orchids in Neptune, NJ. Delicious lemons! Received a call from Joe Silva who said the Blood Oranges are ripe. He boxed them up and shipped them over to us. Wow! What beautiful oranges! Far exceeded our expectations. Will take more photos later but take a look at these babies! Delicious red pulp through and through!
