The Financial Aid office is the absolute worst. I have interacted with them at least once every semester of my BSN program while at OU and they are some of the rudest people I have ever encountered. T...hey could not care less about students and see them only as dollar signs. Tuition increases every year Financial Aid is completely unhelpful to students understanding how to pay their bill. After waiting on the phone to talk to someone in the Financial Aid office, the person I end up speaking with always sounds like I've woken them up from a nap and am inconveniencing them. My advice is to give your time and money to a school that actually cares about its students. See More

Terrible. The money is ridiculous and they dont even have a football team. The school/classes are not worth the amount of money you put into it. Screw you for making my college experience horrible

I have loved my experience here at OU and couldn't have imagined going any where else! There are so many opportunities for students to take advantage of and the campus is beautiful!

I don't know if the staff is hired outside the university for the events at the amphitheater but they are extremely rude. They give no direction and treat guests who pay to come see concerts like herd...s of cattle. Better work on hospitality if you want guests to return.... I traveled all the way from columbus ohio to deal with this. See More

Best years of my life! Can't recommend the Oakland experience highly enough as long as they don't get too PC in this new era. Remember what made OU great in the first place!

I love Oakland University! The school is alot more modern than the surrounding Universities, since OU is still a relatively new University in comparison.

Tuition raises yearly are ridiculous. OU is becoming so unaffordable, when its affordability was a factor in choosing to come here in the first place. I have a 3.97 going into junior year and really l...ooked forward to OU in high school, but have been highly disappointed with my financial situation the past 2 years. Love the professors and my volunteering/jobs here, but the stress regarding money is unbearable. So many students I know here can unfortunately relate. See More

This is my first and last semester at OU. They charge you one thing for tuition, you pay it in full, and then half way through your semester charge you more without notice. And when you don't pay it (...because you're unaware of it) they hit you with late fees. Also, the parking is absolutely ridiculous. If you're not there before 8am, your chances for a spot are slim to none, and you will most likely miss class due to it. I have had nothing but bad experiences. See More

I don't know why my home away from home is getting such low reviews. Every university has issues and tuition raises and so on, but this is your life and you can choose where to go from here. OU has be...en nothing but great for me. My professors are very well educated and hard working and care about each and every individual student even in a lecture hall of 250 people. The campus is incredibly beautiful, obviously. Housing is awesome from the people to the dorms and apartments. I could not have picked a better place to start my adult life. I can't wait to see what my last couple years have in store for me here. Thank you OU for everything you've done for me! See More

I transferred from CMU and instantly fell in love with this school. There are so many ways to get involved, I've had great professors and wonderful advisors. OU is also my top choice for grad school! ...
Parking is rough, wish they would cancel class when roads are unbearable, stop raising tuition, and potentially offer more online classes but as adults these are small things that we can deal with. The education I've received here is remarkable and I've have every opportunity to be successful on campus and in my future career due to the many services that Oakland offers!

**UPDATE 3-24-17: I absolutely cannot recommend Oakland University for students who work full-time and do not live at home. If you need to work 32+ hours per week for insurance and financial support,... Oakland is not the place for you. Their course selections for basic requirements have decreased over the 3 years I have been here. Their online course selections is laughable, though most classes have an online component they charge you for in "Oakland University" book bundles that you have to buy new most of the time (Bio level one courses cost upwards of $300 just for the book). I used to love this school, but now that I have no choice but to live on my own and work full time? It's apparent Oakland is for student who live at home and have parents pay for insurance, shelter, food, and medical bills.

Former review:

More online classes please! Especially for General Education requirements. It's hard to work full time and go to school full time, but that odd class times makes it even harder. I need physics and chemistry, and the only way to take them without losing two work days is online (because you require 10 credits with of both, 2 lecturers and 2 labs each). I want to finish my degree with Oakland, but I will not take "filler classes" just to be at 12 credits per term (as you require for loan approval). Please make your course options more available for those of us that work 32+ hours per week! I am a senior, I have come so close to being done; I don't want to stop because you're not readily offering the classes you require. I hope this isn't a useless effort on my part, crossing my fingers that OU reads these.

I am beyond frustrated with the school for several reasons. 1) My degree completion is stalled due to the fact that the one class I need to finish is NEVER available at the OU campus (only at Macomb a...nd I refuse to drive that far, and certainly should not have to). 2) Not only am I forced to take elective classes that I will never use in my life or career, I'm stuck having to pay over $300 for the book, On top of the outrageous tuition cost for a class that, again, I will never use. 3) Overall I have had decent professors however, they sometimes don't seem to understand, or care, the most have other classes and full time jobs. Last, but not least, figure the parking situation out because it's ridiculous. See More

Oakland has really torn my heart lately. I love the professors, the programs and the students. However, lately I have become very unsure of whether or not Oakland had the students best interest as a ...priority. I feel very betrayed over Hynd & the boards decision, and the amount, at which they have chosen to raise tuition- not to mention the lack of open communication with students over the issue. Oakland stated the extreme increase (about 8% which exceeded the states max therefor bypassing state assistance- which doesn't matter to them because they are making far more off students through the future than they would receive from the state) was due to wanting to compete on the level with other schools, but I didn't want to go to "other schools" I wanted to go to OAKLAND- the school that was supposed to put students interest first. There was nothing wrong with the cafeteria, nor do I care if the newly constructed University dr. between 75 and campus looks 'pretty' ( 50% of the university drive makeover was funded by OU and the other 50 by the city of Auburn Hills ). I am here for an education so I can be prepared for my career- not for a top of the line cafe or a scenic drive. Let's just say if I wasn't graduating in April I would go elsewhere and if I were to go back I would chose a different university. There is so much more I could say, but I know the only people who will read this is the PR team and will fall on deaf ears. If I wanted to pay for a big 10 degree, I would go to a big ten school. The financial aid criticisms from previous reviews are valid. In fact, I suspect they purposely sidetrack processing your financial aid so they can charge you for late fees. I was even asked to sign t...he same documents multiple times! Either they kept losing my paperwork or they never processed it.
It’s obvious that most money goes into administration or buildings. The school wouldn’t even let me keep my email address because I graduated (ridiculous). It was recently reported that OU spends the least amount of money on students than any school in the state. When a school has had 4 presidents in 8 years, that’s not a good sign. Some professors were good, but others were in the classroom right after getting their PhD and were way in over their head. I transferred from Macomb Community College and as for overall quality, OU is on the same level as a community college. In fact, I liked Macomb more. The tuition rate here is very high considering the prestige (or lack there of) and quality. A lot of fellow graduates I know are struggling to find entry level jobs, so this also goes to show you how an independent, private sector looks at OU’s degrees.

All the teachers talk shit about OU. They bash it 24/7 and I understand why. The teachers I've had are incredibly vague when it comes to assignments and their due dates/what is expected of them. Wayne... State was amazing in comparison to this burn out of a school. I'd say I'm leaving, however, I'm forced to go ONLY to this school by my parents. There is no motivation for a social life at this school either. The student body is no where near bonded. Also, OU tends to not cancel classes on days when they should for severe winter weather. If you have any other options, take them. You will regret ever hearing the name Oakland University. See More

I always feel safe, welcomed, and included on this campus. Now that I am an RA, a whole new world of activities, events, and social interactions has opened up and made my college experience absolutely... flawless. I have been blessed with great professors, advisors, classmates, colleagues, friends, and (now) residents. And I can't think of a better place to earn an education degree--they truly prepare you in every way possible for your future career. Bottom line; I tell everyone to come to OU. It's a fantastic school. See More

The WORST financial aid office ever! Nobody that works there knows what the hell they're talking about which in turn caused me to owe loans that I never even used. Everyone--including the head of the ...friggin department!!-- told me I could use a pending loan to pay for a class I dropped. Obviously this was a lie and now I'm 5 grand in debt and struggling to pay it back. I should've known not to trust their word and just ask my loan provider; it's very apparent I gave them too much faith in being intelligent, helpful people. As well as all this mess, I had the WORST Comp 2 professor. He was a sarcastic asshole who literally laughed in my face when I asked him for help formatting an essay. I failed thanks to him refusing to help me with the simplest things and had to take the class over again when I transferred to a different school. They do nothing for their students so make sure you have your crap together when you go here; trust me, nobody will help you with anything! See More
