Betsy Devos is now threatening to withhold funding from schools that do not reopen in the fall, due to strong concerns about COVID-19. Experts across the board agree: Politics shouldn't control when schools reopen, they should only open when the virus is properly controlled. We need an administration that will care for all children and listen to science. Rep. Ayanna Pressley said it best: "You have no plan. Teachers, kids and parents are fearing for their lives. You point to a private sector that has put profits over people and claimed the lives of thousands of essential workers. July is Disability Pride Month. It is an important month to elevate disabled voices and to remember that all too often, when we talk about marginalized groups, disabled people are ignored or all together forgotten. One deeply important aspect of this intersectionality that Black disabled activists have been fighting to get more attention is how heightened interactions can be between police and Black, disabled people specifically. For example, Black, deaf people can be targeted because certain police might assume an individual not immediately responding to commands is a threat.
