Dr. Moore's Weekly Update

Statement About Possible Teacher Walkout

During the Stillwater Board of Education regularly scheduled board meeting on March 14th, board members will discuss the grassroots effort of teachers to increase salaries by participating in a statewide teacher walkout. The following will be discussed or acted upon at the meeting:

Board members will be provided with and discuss the latest information on the state’s financial crisis and any potential legislative action being taken.

A resolution supporting a salary increase for teachers and other school employees will be considered and possibly voted on by the board of education.

Board members will consider authorizing the superintendent to close all District schools during a teacher “walkout” scheduled by teacher organizations.

For Stillwater to effectively educate its youth, Stillwater Public Schools must place a highly qualified, highly engaged teacher in every classroom and employ skilled individuals in non-teaching positions. This aim will be difficult to achieve next year and the years ahead if the Oklahoma Legislature does not approve a dedicated source of revenue to fund salary increases.

This potential walkout could affect many people in our community. I encourage school employees and community members to attend this board meeting and get involved in the discussion.
