It's sad and shameful to see how technologically inept and ethically bankrupt some people can be in their business dealings.
This morning, we received notification from Homestars contractor review board that we had received a 0/10 testimonial from a client named "Vicky". Not only have we not done shoddy painting work for anyone, we haven't even done any work for any person named Vicky, period.
But apparently, "Vicky" is unaware that Homestars independently verifies every p...osted review to make sure that the poster has actually done business with the company they are reviewing. When that review process happens, and she is unable to produce a contract, the review will be flagged and removed.
And apparently, "Vicky" is also unaware that when you click on her name at the top of her review, it reveals that she also posted a 10/10 review for one of our competitors a week earlier, for the same "project." Are we to presume that my company was painting her house at the same time, only badly?
Now whether this poster is actually an owner or employee of said competitor, or just a client of theirs who was asked to post this fake review for them, it's a pretty transparent charade and frankly, a disgusting display of this company's personal and business ethics.
I have attached screenshots of the reviews in question here, since they will be taken down automatically once Homestars starts their vetting process. Here is a link to our friend Vicky's profile, while it remains: http://homestars.com/homeowner/457971-vicky-from-ottawa
We come by our reputation honestly and believe our competitors should be held to the same ethical standard.
Usually, we take our own "After" photos when we complete a project, but this time we don't have to, because CBC News has done it for us!
This weekend past, we got a call from someone who said they were opening a new restaurant on Nepean Street to replace the old Beckta (left in photo) and needed to change the exterior colours ASAP. We advised them that we would love to help, but that it would really take a miracle to find weather in November to do it properly... but then this Tuesday past, that 15-degrees-Celsius miracle day did come, and we immediately redirected a crew of three over there to get the job done... just in time for the restaurant's on screen debut! Now, to help the guys with the facelift inside...
Well, it's that time of year again, time for the annual Home and Design Show! This year, we decided to mix things up and book two separate booths just across the hall from each other on neighboring corners.
Top photo is our sister company's Right Angle Renovations booth that we are sharing with our valued partner and friend Sarah Kidder (built by us, styled by Sarah). On the bottom is our little show HQ for Strokes of Genius. Looking forward to a great weekend!
As always, comment below if you'd like free tickets, as we do have some left.

We've been spending the day sharing booth space with our valued partners from Benjamin Moore at the Ottawa Home and Garden Show, talking to people about their upcoming spring painting projects and showing off our fresh HomeStars award from last night!
Come down and visit us now until Sunday at the EY Centre! If you would like to come by, leave a comment below and we can give you complimentary tickets.
We attended the HomeStars Best of 2013 Awards dinner tonight at the Hunt Club Golf and Country Club to accept our awards for Best Painting Contractor and Best General Contractor (with our sister company Right Angle Renovations.) From right to left, our sites manager/foreman David Hill, owner Daniel Smith, renovations manager Matt Irish, and frequent partner (and winner of Decorator of the Year) Sarah Kidder of SKDesign.
We were also featured in an exclusive video profile that aired as part of a country-wide HomeStars tour of companies who have own Best Of Awards multiple years running (in our case, 4 straight!)
We're very proud of our team's showing this year and look forward to seeing all our HomeStars friends again next year, if not before!
Well, the results are in and we couldn't be happier! Every year, independent contractor rating site HomeStars gives out their coveted Best Of awards to the best-reviewed companies in each trade category for the preceding year. The list is up for 2013 and we are elated to announce that not only have we at Strokes of Genius won the Best Painting Contractor award for the fourth year in a row, but our sister division Right Angle Renovations has also won the award for Best General... Contractor of 2013 in their very first year under our ownership and branding!
I think this calls for some champagne tonight- Cheers!

We just received our very first review on the design hub social network Houzz that is gaining popularity here in Canada. Completely unrequested and unprompted, it looks to be a client who hired us for work sometime last spring. What a pleasant Friday surprise!
