In 2003, the movie The Last Samurai put the region of Taranaki on the world map. Many locals still refer to that time as the "Samurai Summer".

Port Taranaki

Welcome to the cruise ship Caledonian Sky!
Early this morning, 97 passengers and 79 crew of Caledonian Sky were welcomed into Port Taranaki. Although the weathe...r started out less than desirable, New Plymouth has certainly put on another cracking day.
While in Taranaki, the Caledonian Sky's passengers have had the opportunity to get a closer look at Mt Taranaki and Egmont National Park, take a New Plymouth highlights and Pukekura Park tour, or have free time to make their own way around the city.
The Caledonian Sky departs Port Taranaki at 6 o'clock this evening but we look forward to welcoming her back in the new year, on the 31st January.

Taranaki Mountain Shuttle

The mountain is a popular place to visit over the long weekend. Kaiauai car park is already over flowing this morning and North Egmont car park is filling up fast. Our shuttle customers will be pleased they called us.

Ten climbers set out to climb Mt Taranaki’s difficult East Ridge. Six got down safely. Two veered off course and spent an awful night out in the blizzard. Two more were marooned high on the mountain and clung to life, texting pleas for help.

An exciting day on the mountain yesterday with three guides, one assistant, and two cameramen, trying to capture the magic that is Taranaki. Looking forward to seeing the footage. #TNF
