A few days ago I spoke to a local Milwaukee school about skating and the Olympics. They were very enthusiastic and most of the students have actually been inside the Pettit which made it very easy to talk to them about speed skating.
Thanks Christian! I enjoyed the conversation!
Being an Olympian means training hard when no one else is watching. I had a great conversation with speed skater Brian Hansen about what it takes to sustain one...self when training and what one does when setbacks inevitably come. Sports Envoys are athletes who travel overseas to lead programs that were developed by U.S. embassies. While explaining speed skating to a tropical island sometimes felt a little out of place, talking about the universal values of athletics and the Olympics are messages that are always well received.

So I just got back from a pretty incredible trip to a small island called Palau. It is near the equator southwest of Guam. I didn’t even know that there was land there until I zoomed in far enough on google maps. I was invited through the local U.S. embassy to part take in a program talking to schools and other areas of the community about healthy lifestyle as well as my experience at the Olympics. It was an incredible trip and I am so glad I went despite this nasty sunburn on my back. This is a photo of me paddling in an outrigger canoe with the local Palauan canoeing team. I’ll be sharing some more photos now (I couldn’t earlier because my phone got water logged from the ocean)🇺🇸🇵🇼✌️🤙
There are so many people to thank who have helped me in the lead up to these past games. First thank you to my training partners Jeff, Nancy Jr. and Darren Huang. It has been such a fun training atmosphere over the years and I’m very thankful to be a part of it. And to Nancy Sr. for countless hours of program planning, timing, and walking on my hamstrings to loosen them up. Thank you to Julie and Duane at Froedtert. This was my number one off ice resource leading up to the... games for strength training and rehab. Also thanks to Jon Burke, Fikre, and Jason. They have been a tremendous help at training camps and at these Olympic Games helping me recover and prepare for the next workout. Jessica LaRoche for all the help with nutrition and cooking at breakfast every morning; Chris Needham for the skate tech; and Tom Cushman for on ice help during these games. What a trip it’s been. #Thankful
