Job well done by our Communications Department. Most don't realize that this is one of the most stressful jobs in public safety. Thank you to the hard working men and women of the Broward Sheriff's Office for their dedication and commitment. We all appreciate you!

Broward County should close the difficult first chapter of a new 911 dispatch system, leaders involved in the system said Thursday. Their next step: giving police and fire experts more control, and giving 911 operators more respect. Police, fire, city, county and Broward Sheriff's Office officials....

PROTECTING OUR VIBRANT RELIGIOUS AND COMMUNITY INSTITUTIONS

Fifteen years ago this month, our country endured the unimaginable. The terror attacks of 9/11 were an assault on each and every one of us—and forever changed the way we go about our lives. As we remember the nearly 3,000 innocent souls who perished that fateful day, we also must look toward the future and closer to home.

While law enforcement agencies throughout the country have had incredible success in preventing ...another 9/11 and large-scale attack from occurring at American landmarks, we continue to face mounting security concerns at our soft targets—especially our vital houses of worship and lively community centers.

Sadly, these important institutions, because of their very welcoming and open-door nature, face special security risks each and every day. These foundations of a civil and enlightened society have tragically become targets for individuals and groups who are intent on seeking to inflict harm, either because they are fueled by hate or suffering from mental illness.

Congratulations to BSO Explorer Post 3224 who recently participated in the 2016 Florida Sheriff’s Explorer Association State Competition.

The FSEA State Competition brings Explorer posts from across the state together to compete in firearms competition, officer down drills, domestic violence, building search and traffic stop scenarios.

We are proud of our team whose success in this statewide competition is a direct reflection of determination and training conducted on a we...ekly basis at BSO.

The Explorer program gives participants the opportunity to learn and experience law enforcement duties alongside BSO deputies in on-going training and community service projects. The program emphasizes responsibility, leadership, teamwork and self-reliance.

"One love, that’s what’s up!”

A security guard’s statement summarizes so well what BSO Deputy Mario Potvin was doing at a shopping plaza in Pompano Beach. The s...ecurity guard captured Deputy Potvin handing out clean clothes to a homeless man. When asked why he was helping out the man, Deputy Potvin said: “Because they are human beings, too. They have a hard time, but they are good people.”

Deputy Potvin, who works road patrol in Pompano Beach, loves helping those who find themselves with no place to call home. “I consider them family; this is my calling,” he said.

Deputy Potvin has been with BSO for 15 years and is just one of the many BSO employees who #seethegood in #UnitingBroward.

Thank you for putting on the uniform and protecting the community each and every day, Deputy Potvin.

A message from Sheriff Israel was featured in this past weekend's Sun Sentinel South Florida 100. The 100 is where South Florida's most influential people weigh in on the current events they think matter most:

"It’s hurricane season. The tropics are heating up and South Floridians need to be ready. Proper planning makes everyone safer in the event of a damaging storm. I always say: pray for the best but prepare for the worst. Create a disaster supply kit and have an emergen...cy plan in place for you and your family. Assume you will need supplies for a minimum of three days, but stock enough for seven if possible. For food preparation, remember you may not have electricity. By preparing ahead, we can better weather any storm and enjoy sunnier days ahead."

Cadets of Police Academy classes 303 and 305 were in the community with BSO's best this weekend at our Grocery Give-a-Way. These future law enforcement professionals are learning that giving back and getting to know the people they protect and serve is one of the most important parts of the job.
