1983. Lahore. Bushra Aitzaz being beaten and arrested during Martial Law. Bushra was much younger than Maryam today and mother of two small kids. She was leading a procession protesting the regime's evidence Law reducing testimony of women. Mian Nawaz Shareef was Minister in Punjab.
After teaching English Literature for three decades Bushra retired to devote herself to her first passion; the uplift and empowerment of women. A pioneer founder of Womens’ Action Forum(WAF), a vigorous participant in movements to restore democracy (MRD, 1980’s) and the judiciary(2007-9), she bravely faced police brutality, arrests and jail. Presently heads Womens' Cricket leading young girls, even from the remotest parts of Pakistan, to glory in Asian Cricket. Today she steps out to contest a general seat to the National Assembly in an environment still and increasingly dominated by men and patriarchal mindsets.
