Happy Birthday to my brother from another mother @devinfin. Thank you for belaying me as I sketched up X-Rock choss before you were a climber. Thank you for hol...ding the end of my rope when it and the gear are just for looks and death is fucking perched like old crow. Thank you for hauling 60lbs of pads some five miles up and back for more of the same. Thank you for accompanying me up alpine towers, desert visionquests, powder turns, the loss of friends who didn't make it, weathered squats and holy smokes in dripping talus rat caves. Thank you for a couch to sleep on, for my proxy godfatherhood to your wonderful son, for your stoke and goodtimes support, for happy days and "Bitch, get up there!". Thank you for being wind in my sails and a sweet sailor to sit with while the doldrums see us stranded on still water. Thank you for the no-shit tears in my eyes right now as I look back on near 25 years, you son of a bitch (don't tell your mom I said that). Love you, brother. Thank you. See you soon. @andrew_burr pic #indiancreek #bearsearsnationalmonument #utah #desert #usa

A couple days ago I "spotted" @kat.whipple as she set out on an unclimbed route up the Reservoir Wall. Flared, overhanging chimney to turn a corner into what lo...oked to be hands and fists... Taking off from the boulder-strewn gulley behind a detached tower that makes up one wall of the climb, all looked pretty good, pretty casual... until she reached the last of the foothold flakes about 25' up and 10' out over a farking Sarlacc pit full of washing machines and broken teeth. I waved away throwing star flakes that rained down intermittently while calculating what human pinball I'd need to prepare for should the worst occur. What happened next turned out to be easily one of the top three most metal acts of rock climbing I've ever seen. Leaving the flake, Whip committed to a bell-shaped chimney that went waaaay further out we thought, and way faster. No way out. Absolute horror fall. Zero, fucking zero options for failure or retreat. Screams. Deep psychological pep talks to the higher mind and the basement dwelling animal. I shit y'all not: there were tears in my eyes as I watched a true death battle: a mix of brutal offwidth scrap-fight wrapped up in a mastery of technique. Climbing sideways out a near-horizontal chimney-offwidth, Whip chanted terrifying spells that somehow carried her into the vertical crack above. That turned out to be a bunch of #5Camalots, not fists. Short on gear, 15' runouts on the widest Creek stone, she topped out for the onsight first ascent. It was a moment of mastery. At one point I thought to myself, "she doesn't realize how hard she's climbing right now..." She was just going. Unstoppable. Charging for a flared, tipped-out number 6 Camalot. No option to fail. I've never, ever seen anything like it. It was art, and death, and life... mixed up before our eyes in a form of climbing I won't claim to fully grasp. It was like magic. Scary, scary magic. Necromancy. #indiancreek #offwidth #mosthonorable

Seriously? One day after Trump orders a review to PERMANENTLY reduce protection for some parks and monuments (https://wilderness.org/parksunderattack), he tries misdirection.

Need something else to get upset about? WSJ points fingers at "The rock-climbing industrial complex". You better get real, people. Wall Street and conservative news officially has your number. Read every word.

Terry L. Anderson writes that companies selling outdoor gear such as Patagonia lobby endlessly for more federal wilderness—subsidized by the taxpayer.

Merci Messieurs. Re painting circuits at Bas Cuvier, #fontainebleau. A climbing area that is over 100 years old needs care of all sorts. This place is unlike an...y other, and we owe a debt to ourselves, to histories past and present. The amount of traffic in truly world-class areas with easy access can be surprising, and the melange of users can be downright detrimental and disgusting. Watch this space if you're in the area: we'll be organizing a BAS CUVIER CLEANUP very soon... No banners, no organizations: we're just gonna fucking clean up a place we love. If you've been to #bascuvier, you know that's gonna get real gross once we break through the dead leaves. @jwebxl @hannahmichelled_ @iancotterb @erinayla.mc @rbelsch... How bout @arjandekock @paigeclaassen you guys in? Anyone else if free to help, every fuckin day you go climbing, no matter where you're from. Details in the next few days. Prolly gonna happen in the restful rain, too, because climbing. #gloves #rubbers #tp #tape #towels #bandaids #butts #bottles #straightuptrash comment if you're in, I'll tag you with a date. It'll be bring-your-own gloves-you-plan-to-burn.

Climbing can be stupid sometimes... rather, how we look at climbing can be stupid. I fell off the crux bump of this for days: it's literally at my limit of reac...h. Any shorter of arm or height, it wouldn't go for me. A little taller, it'd be much easier. As it is, it was damned difficult, for me. Everything was wonderful. Heading into the deeper reaches of the #bearsears has been medicine lately. Calming, tempering, energizing, life saving medicine. Go get some. You need it. Bring it back to your friends and family, and your enemies. And do whatever you can to protect these places.
