Man ... I can't decide which book to write next. I guess that's a good problem to have, but it's frustrating!

Hi all, this isn't technically a writing update and I promise I won't spam your feeds with non-writing stuff often (once in, like, seven years is pretty good, right?), but my nephew could use some support in getting to Costa Rica to research sea turtles. He's a huge fan of animals and hopes to be a marine biologist, and this is a really cool opportunity for him! If you've got a few bucks to kick in, please do. If not, no worries, and the writing updates will resume shortly. Thanks!

Hi! My name is Ki and I have the opportunity to participate in the Ecology Project International's school-based research trip to Costa Rica. I will be spending nine days on the beach, collecting data on the nesting habits of leatherback sea turtles. My group will also be participating in educatio...

Jeez, it's been way too long since I posted here. Sorry about that! I haven't had a lot of news to share, recently. It's been slow going on my space opera, Divergence Point, but I'm happy to say that I've finished the third draft and shipped it off to Kirsten for her thoughts. With any luck, we'll be shopping it to publishers soon! In the meantime, I'm already putting together notes for two different new books. One's a dark fantasy novel, and the other's a non-fantasy, non-SF novel set at an internet startup in the early DotCom era. Haven't decided which one I'm going to start working on, but I'll figure it out soon.

Sorry for the radio silence, folks. I've been crazy busy this month! I know it's a bit late, but in case you missed it from the newsletter, ALL of my books are 50% off at Smashwords this month. You can get formats that work on any device - Kindle, Nook, iPhone, etc. Check it out!

Molly Thompson has never had an easy life. I've received my copy-edits from Lauren on Erinyes, my new short story set in the II AM universe, and will be prepping it for publication this weekend! Release date to be announced very soon.

Good news, everyone! Lauren Vogelbaum, current star of various HowStuffWorks videos and podcasts and also the super cool editor of my II AM books, is going to be editing my short story set in that universe. That's awesome, because she really helped shape those books, and there's no one I trust more to do right by those characters! I'm hoping to have it published and available for you guys in late April.

Hi all, I'm looking for some professional-caliber proofreading on my new short story. If you have an English degree or similar, and especially if you have previous proofreading experience at a pro or semi-pro level, please drop me a message letting me know why you think you'd be good for the job. This is not content or line editing, just proofing. I'm looking for someone who could do a fast turnaround on 11k words -- let's say a week, two tops. Price is negotiable; we can talk about it privately. Thanks!

My short story set in the II AM universe is finished, cleaned up, and sent out to my readers. I hope to do a relatively speedy turnaround, get it edited, and put it out for 99 cents on Kindle, Nook, and other eReaders. I don't have a date yet, but I'll keep you guys informed!

Here's a little snippet:

Her mother took a breath, swallowed whatever it was she’d been about to say, and crossed the room. She put her arms around Molly, who leaned against her stomach. “All right. List...en, your father wanted to let it go, of course, because he’s a gigantic softie …”

Molly laughed a little. Her father was six-four, built like an NFL tight end, and had spent nearly ten years as a bar bouncer in a rough area of Brooklyn before moving into management. He also sometimes teared up at particularly moving commercials, especially ones with kittens in them.

“… and I had to come play the bad cop, like usual,” her mom continued.

Been too long since I've updated! I hope everyone had a great holiday season and a happy new year. Sorry for my absence, but hopefully you'll be excited to hear that I'm finishing up my vampire short story (starring Molly) this weekend. It still has to go out to readers and stuff, but it should be available fairly soon. Here's an excerpt!

Molly felt a grin on her face, knew it looked more like the snarl of a wolf than anything resembling mirth. She knew it was the sort of... savage grin she’d only ever seen once before, on the face of her friend Two, that night when Darren had died and Molly had been set free. “No. You don’t understand, Cait, but he can’t touch me. He can’t even think about touching me, can’t even dream about it. I’m safe, but he is *fucked*. He made a promise, and he broke it, and I’m going to make him pay in exactly the way he’s supposed to.”

Caitlyn was looking at her, uncomprehending, and Molly forced her ferocious smile into something more reassuring, something less horrible. “After I’m done with him, Calvin Totillo is never going to speak to you again. That troglodyte will be lucky if he can speak to anyone, ever.”

She took two steps back, out past the stall’s open door and into the bathroom.

“I’m calling in the Erinyes,” she said.

Hey guys, I'm searching for "beta readers" again - people who will read the drafts of my novels and give me solid feedback and, most importantly, criticism. The perks of this are: you get to read my stuff super early, you get mentioned in the acknowledgments, and you get a free copy of the book if/when it comes out.

This time around I am specifically looking for people of color, LGBT+ people, LatinX people, and people who don't live in the United States. My characters are wid...e and varied, but I'm a straight white dude and am probably screwing some stuff up! I need insight. You should have a strong grasp of English, be comfortable reading a 400-page novel in ~30 days, and be prepared to tell me what parts of it didn't work for you! You don't have to hunt typos (but you can if you want); the most important thing is being able to give insight into life experiences I've never had. If you fit the bill, please send me a message explaining why you think you'd be a good beta reader. Thanks!

Received my agent's comments on the space opera today. Overall she likes it a lot -- thinks it's maybe my best book yet! There is of course a lot of work to do to make it publication-ready, but I'm already looking forward to digging back into it in January and performing more surgery.

Time for my occasional eReader survey! Please answer this so I know what formats to support with future books and stories:

What is your primary eBook reading device (ie: kindle, nook, phone, etc) and where do you purchase your eBooks (ie: Amazon, B&N, smashwords, etc)? If there are multiple answers to either question, that's fine too.

My bi-monthly newsletter went out today. If you missed it, I'll put the link in the comments. It featured this terrific illustration by my friend Ethan Kocak of the fourth and final alien race from my space opera, the semi-robotic lizard men known as the Hjarad!
