It Is Time for Las Vegas to Stop Penalizing the Poor Through Its Systematic Use of Criminal Justice Fines and Fees. Las Vegas Municipal Court is tasked with handling “traffic violations, criminal misdemeanor offenses, municipal code ordinance infractions and civil ordinance actions (not exceeding $2,500).” In this capacity, the court system, as well as state and local officials have imposed several different fines, fees, and assessments that punish the poor and people of colo...r for offenses as trivial as jaywalking. Defense attorneys have spoken out against these practices, going so far as to sue the city. Advocates and lawmakers have proposed legislation aimed at reducing these injustices. Nevertheless, officials have resisted reforms. It is time for Las Vegas to stop penalizing the poor through its systematic use of criminal justice fines and fees.
